Care in a Heartbeat

Day Kimball Hospital's Capital Campaign
to expand the emergency department

Over the past 10 months, 930 individuals and businesses donated a total of $3,048,404.68 to the “Care in a Heartbeat” campaign, exceeding the $3 million fundraising goal needed to build a new emergency department at Day Kimball Hospital, which is part of the Day Kimball Healthcare network. Donations came from each of the 13 towns that make up Northeast Connecticut. Support came from all the other New England states. And from Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Missouri and Virginia. People gave what they could, ranging from $2 to $500,000. To honor the largest contribution of $500,000 made by Steven and Marjolaine Townsend of Brooklyn, Conn., the new emergency department will be named the Townsend Emergency Medical Center.

Following is a breakdown of the $3,048,404.68 raised as of May 9, 2012:
·         Leadership, including some physician (donations of $50,000 or more): $1,625,000;
     53 percent of the total raised
·         Business and community: $861,892.68; 28 percent of the total raised
·         Physicians: $481,250; 16 percent of the total raised
·         Day Kimball employees and volunteers: $80,262; 3 percent of the total raised

Day Kimball Hospital receives more than 30,000 visits annually to the Emergency Department (ED)—in a facility originally built to handle 18,000—and is forecasted to eclipse that within the next few years. Increases in the over-65 population will continue to spur this precipitous utilization, which further taxes our already strained local healthcare system. The current Emergency Department is too small based on present day volume and architectural standards, lacks privacy, and inhibits physician and staff recruitment.

We believe that creating a new Emergency Department capable of meeting the current and future needs of this community is the single most important capital initiative Day Kimball and this community can undertake. To accomplish this unprecedented effort, an enormous financial investment is required. As a non-profit corporation, the hospital’s traditional sources of income alone cannot bear the expense of this $10 million initiative.

Therefore, Day Kimball Healthcare’s Board of Directors is seeking to fund the project through a combination of traditional financing and philanthropy. Though the $3 million goal has been met, donation and pledges can still be made by selecting "Make Your Pledge" from the menu on the left.
