Message from the Interim President and
Chairman of the Board of Directors

ANN ERRICHETTI

PETER D. DEARY, Chairman of the Bord of Directors (Left)
IRVING J. SCHOPPE, Interim President and CEO (Right)

When Irv walked into the President’s office during the first few days of 2006 to serve an interim role as the Hospital’s chief administrator, he arrived having had a seat with the Board of Directors for more than a decade, two of those years as Chairman. Even with this wealth of knowledge, Irv readily shares how much he discovered about his community hospital over the course of the past twelve months. From the technology and medical resources, to the skills and compassion of the healthcare professionals who chose to make their careers here, it’s easy to overlook what’s happening at your regional hospital. That is, until the time comes that you need care, or in Irv’s case, you step in to support the daily operations.

In a reflection of Irv’s experience, and the experience of many who tell us “we had no idea that Day Kimball can…”, we are inviting you to Discover Day Kimball. While an escorted tour in our halls and community health center sites would be ideal, we’re realists and therefore are using the tool of our annual report to serve as a floor-by-floor, building by building guide to the programs, technology and resources we have to offer. Take a few moments and visit these pages, becoming a more informed healthcare consumer and, we hope, an ambassador for the great things Day Kimball Hospital and our regional outpatient locations have to offer.

While our search committee looked externally to find the best candidate to serve as our next president, we looked internally at systems and relationships to pave the way for the selected individual. Initial strategic planning sessions were held and all voices of the Day Kimball community were heard, including a significant number of our medical staff and members of the Board of Directors. While still a work in progress, refreshed systems, an outline of a strategic plan and renewed partnerships within the
continuum of care were completed by late fall and prepared for the arrival of the 15th President of Day Kimball Hospital, Robert E. Smanik. Bob, as he prefers to be called, comes to Day Kimball with more than 28 years of health care administration experience, specifically with non-profit organizations. We expect great things of this talented administrator and, after an 11-month search extend our thanks and appreciation to the dedicated search committee.

We also extend thanks to a good number of people who stepped forward to support daily operations during this transitional year. Members of the administration team took on new tasks, and the Board of Directors served active roles in monitoring and building the strategic plan. This joint letter is reflective of the strong partnerships that were developed this past year, and will remain in place with the new President.

As you become familiar with the resources featured on these pages, please consider that many of them would not be possible without the support of the community we serve. Day Kimball Hospital is committed to remaining a community-focused organization and good stewards of the generous donations we receive. We ask that you discover the worthiness of Day Kimball Hospital as you plan your annual giving.

Thank you for a great year, and an even brighter year ahead.
