Dr. Alessandro, DO, ABHPM |
Dr. Joseph Alessandro, now Board Certified in Family Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Care
Over 2,800 physicians are certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine; in the state of Connecticut, only 28 physicians are certified, and one of these 28 physicians is Day Kimball’s own Dr. Joseph Alessandro, DO,ABHPM, Co-Medical Director of Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut. Dr. Alessandro is now Board Certified in Family Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Care and also has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics.
In November of 2006, Dr. Alessandro took the extensive exam and became certified in the broad therapeutic model known as Hospice and Palliative Care.To become certified in this specialty, a physician must put in a lot of hard work and dedication to pass the detailed exam. For Dr. Alessandro, the certification means more than passing a test. He says,“This specialty allows physicians to interact with their patients on a different level. I owed it to our patients to get certified and learn as much as I could about Hospice Care.” Dr.Alessandro helps patients each day at Brooklyn Family Medicine, but the Hospice patients are equally important to him. “The most satisfying part about treating Hospice patients is seeing them achieve their end-of-life goals,” says Dr.Alessandro.
According to Dr. Alessandro, goals play a large part in the role of a Hospice and Palliative Care physician. Each patient has specific needs and wants, which can sometimes provide a challenge for the physician. He says, “Time plays a large role in the lives of Hospice patients. Issues become acute and the focus is mainly on managing specific problems quickly and effectively.”
As Dr. Alessandro takes great pride in caring for all of his patients,
regardless of their life stages, he believes that becoming a Hospice and
Palliative Medicine
physician was a gratifying
choice.“Dealing with end-of-life-issues,”
Dr. Alessandro says,“gives you more of a
perspective of life. It
makes you evaluate the
world and issues around
you in a different way. It
means a lot to me that I
am able to help meet the
needs and wants of
patients that are in the
care of Hospice.”
Physicians who become certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine volunteer for such a position and often spend a great amount of time preparing and learning. Dr. Alessandro felt that this was something he could do to help more people. Dr. Alessandro says of his role as the Co-Medical Director of Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut,“I feel privileged to be one of the 28 physicians in the State of Connecticut who are Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.”
