Day Kimball Hospital Presents Fall Prevention Lecture at
Quinebaug Valley Senior Center

Dr. Joseph Botta,
geriatrician and Kathy Demers, APRN from Day Kimball Hospital’s Center
for Healthy Aging and Kim Wanegar-Nation, PT, director of Rehabilitation Services,
will host a free lecture on
Fall Prevention on July 13 at the Quinebaug Valley Senior Center in Brooklyn.

PUTNAM, CT On Friday, July 13, Day Kimball Hospital will host a free lecture on Fall Prevention at the Quinebaug Valley Senior Center in Brooklyn from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.  Guest speakers, Dr. Joseph Botta, geriatrician; Kathy Demers, APRN; and Kim Wanegar-Nation, PT, director of Rehabilitation Services, will discuss the prominence of falls among the senior population, medical complications, prevention methods and more.

“Falls by older adults are prevalent and debilitating,” said Dr. Joseph Botta and Kathy Demers, APRN of Day Kimball Hospital’s Center for Healthy Aging.  “One third of community-dwelling elders fall every year.  In addition, as people age, their risk of falling increases dramatically.  Falls account for 70% of accidental deaths among people 75 and older.  More than 90% of hip fractures result from falls, with most occurring in people older than seventy.”

Dr. Botta and Demers added, “Falls among the elderly occur for a wide variety of reasons, including visual impairment, arthritis, low blood pressure, balance problems and scatter rugs, just to name a few.  However, falls can be prevented.  Medical providers such as doctors, nurses and physical therapists are trained to identify people who are at risk for falls. They can provide treatment and educations to increase safety and independence.”

This lecture is free and open to the public. Those who are interested to learn more about fall prevention and speak with the facilitators are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served. To register, please call Day Kimball Hospital’s Corporate Communications Office at (860) 963-6384 by Tuesday, July 10th.
