Day Kimball Hospital to Host New Weight Loss Support Group – Living Normal

Living Normal’s group facilitator, Maureen Boyd,
is a successful post-operative having undergone gastric bypass surgery in March of 2004.  Boyd is maintaining a weight loss of 214 pounds, and in this group, she will share through personal experience and reflection, her strategies for sustaining weight loss and living a joyful life.

PUTNAM, CT Beginning on Thursday, June 14, Day Kimball Hospital will host Living Normal, a weight loss maintenance support group for those who have had or are considering weight loss surgery.  The group will be facilitated by Maureen Boyd, entertainer and motivational coach who has experienced gastric bypass surgery herself.  Living Normal will take place the second Thursday of every month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Day Kimball Hospital’s Robert H. Field Conference Room #1.

“I am pleased to have an accomplished and inspiring individual such as, Maureen, offer to  facilitate Living Normal’s monthly support group,” said Elaine Turner, RN, Community Education Specialist at Day Kimball Hospital.  “This group will be beneficial to those pre or post-weight loss surgery patients, as well as for those who are considering the procedure. Even though we do not perform the surgery at Day Kimball Hospital, we can complement it with support close to home for our eastern Connecticut community.”

Living Normal is a new group to Day Kimball Hospital and northeastern Connecticut, and serves to help individuals improve their chances of avoiding weight regain.  Living Normal also serves to educate people who are considering weight loss surgery, as well as pre-operative patients who have secured a surgery date.  As a successful post-operative having undergone gastric bypass surgery in March of 2004, Boyd is maintaining a weight loss of 214 pounds.  In this group, she will share through personal experience and reflection, her strategies for sustaining weight loss and living a joyful life.

“Weight loss surgery is changing the lives of thousands of people in Connecticut,” said Boyd.  “Before I had my surgery, I weighed 360 pounds and suffered from obesity related diseases including, diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.  Through this group, however, I would also like to educate people that weight loss surgery is only a tool; it’s a catalyst for weight loss.  I must dispel the myth that significant weight loss through radical surgery means it is the ‘easy way out.’  Nothing about my weight loss journey has been easy.  My weight loss success is only partly attributable to a commitment to behavioral change, including regular exercise and healthy eating. Equally important is living a joyful, passionate life.  In other words, know what you’re made of and then give it all away!”

For more information about Living Normal, contact Elaine Turner, RN, at (860) 963-5331. Maureen Boyd is well known in the community as a singer, most notably in “Broadway Live” performances.  She lives with her family in Hampton, where she enjoys biking, horseback riding, and long hikes. Day Kimball Hospital is a non-profit, 103-bed community hospital in Putnam.  Day Kimball has been in operation since 1894, and provides for the health care needs of Northeastern Connecticut, and nearby Massachusetts and Rhode Island.  Day Kimball Hospital is served by more than 1,000 employees and more than 100 physicians, dentists and medical specialists.
