St. Mary’s Outreach Ministry Donates $1,000 to Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut

Priscilla Dowd, Outreach Ministry member and Secretary of St. Mary of the Visitation, presents Carol Emmerthal, RN, BSN, Associate Director of Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut with a check for $1,000 for the special needs of the program’s patients

PUTNAM, CT–The Outreach Ministry of St. Mary of the Visitation in Putnam recently made a $1,000 donation to Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut.  According to Priscilla Dowd, an Outreach Ministry member and Secretary of the church, the donation is to be used for the special needs of hospice and palliative care patients.

St. Mary’s Outreach Ministry strives to make contributions on
the local, state, national and international levels. According to
Mrs. Dowd, the Outreach Ministry chose Day Kimball Hospital’s Hospice program as this year’s beneficiary for a very special purpose.  The donation was given to honor of the memory of Father Francis O’Keefe, who served as a Hospice chaplain and was a long-time supporter of the program. Mrs. Dowd also
added that the donation had special meaning to her because her husband, James, passed away on the Hospice program 17
years ago.

“Hospice was wonderful to my husband,” said Mrs. Dowd. “His caregivers treated him with dignity and respect, and really got to know him. Hospice’s integrative approach treated him as a whole person, and they knew so much more than just his medical problems.”

“I’m honored to receive this donation from St. Mary’s Outreach Ministry,” said Carol Emmerthal, RN, BSN, Associate Director of Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut.  “It is so special because it is in memory of Father Frank, he was so good to our patients. It is also nice to be able to provide for the special needs of our patients, which could be anything from delivering a special meal to delivering flowers to their homes.”
