Day Kimball Hospital Announces April Employee of the Month, Regina Ackart-Barid, OT, of Rehabilitation Services

Regina Ackart-Baird, OT, was nominated
as Day Kimball Hospital’s April Employee
of the Month.

PUTNAM, CTDay Kimball Hospital announces that Regina Ackart-Baird, an occupational therapist in the Rehabilitation Services Department is the organization’s employee of the month.  After reviewing several nominations from hospital management, the Employee Council selected Ackart-Baird for this honor.  The Employee Council is comprised of more than 20 employee representatives from various departments within the hospital.

When asked about her nomination as employee of the month, Ackart-Baird exclaimed, “Wow! It’s a great feeling to receive the nomination and to be recognized by my colleagues for doing what I am passionate about.  I’m grateful to my family, friends, peers and patients who have supported my professional development.”

She continued, “I love working at Day Kimball Hospital.  It is a place where support and team work prevail.  Awards like this really speak to a work environment that promotes the pursuit of skill, mastery and excellence that all culminate to high quality patient care for our community.”

Ackart-Baird joined the Day Kimball Hospital rehabilitation staff in February of 2000, and works primarily in the DKH Danielson Health Center.  She came to Day Kimball with a diverse set of skills.  She started her career as a paraprofessional in a public school system, and then became a coordinator of volunteers for a Hospice organization.  After earning her degree in occupational therapy, she worked for outpatient and school-based rehabilitation, followed by work as a staff therapist in local nursing homes and hospitals.

“Regina has a natural gift of healing touch.  She has devoted herself to obtaining the skills and knowledge necessary to bring relief and quality of life to patients challenged by debilitating pain, severe edema issues and post-trauma related dysfunctions,” said Kim Waneger-Nation, PT, director of Rehabilitation Services at Day Kimball Hospital.

Wanegar-Nation continued, “Regina is the first referral that many post-mastectomy patients receive.  She works with the patients, families and physicians, to reduce the pain often experienced after a mastectomy.  She has revived the Day Kimball Hospital Breast Cancer Support Group, bringing hope and empowerment to those who attend.”

Ackart-Baird is an eager learner, and recently completed the requirements necessary to maintain the continuation of her Clinical Level III status as an occupational therapist.  In 1997, she completed her education and earned a combined Bachelor and Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from Russell Sage College.

Also a member of the Integrative Medicine Team, Ackart-Baird is committed to ensuring that patients know their options for a combination of traditional and non-traditional medicine.  When she’s not working, Ackart-Baird enjoys spending time with her family.  She is a former secretary of the Mystic Weavers’ Guild and an extraordinary chair caner.

Ackart-Baird, 48, lives in Putnam with her husband, the Reverend David Baird.  The couple has three children, Katie Fucci, Maggie Baird and Matthew Baird.  Katie’s husband’s name is John and they have a son, Zachary.  Maggie and Matthew are both students at Quinebaug Valley Community College in Danielson.
