News & EventsThe Burdick Family Contributes Largest Gift to Date For a State-of-the-Art Fetal Monitoring System at Day Kimball Hospital
PUTNAM, CT – On Friday, May 16, Day Kimball Hospital dedicated its birthing center to the Burdick Family of Hampton, who donated the largest gift to date, allowing the Hospital to purchase a state-of-the-art fetal monitoring system for the birthing center. In honor of this generous family, the birthing center at Day Kimball Hospital has been named The Burdick Family Birthing Center. The ceremony took place Friday evening and included special guest speakers, State Senator, Donald E. Williams, Jr., State Representative, Michael Caron and Putnam Mayor, Robert Viens, among others. Over 100 friends of the Burdick family and Day Kimball Hospital attended the evening and listened to the words of gratitude from Robert Smanik, Day Kimball Hospital President & CEO and Nancy Morrow, Vice President for Development, among others. Burdick family members also spoke and shared their Day Kimball Hospital memories with the crowd while praising the care they received at the Hospital. After the speakers concluded and the plaques were hanging on the wall to mark the priceless gift this family has given to Day Kimball’s birthing center, guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and mingled with family members and friends. Recognizing the importance of quality healthcare in Northeastern Connecticut, the Burdick family has been supporting Day Kimball Hospital, its programs and services since 1997. In May of 2005, Day Kimball Hospital hosted a dedication ceremony in honor of the Burdick family’s fulfillment of a multi-year pledge supporting Diagnostic Imaging services. This gift was made in memory of Donald and Marilyn Burdick’s young daughter, M. Melinda Burdick, who passed away just shy of her second birthday. In December of 2006, Burdick family members, Donald and Marilyn; Richard and Jean; Lynn; Kathleen Burdick-LaChance; Joy Tyler; Judy (Burdick) and Ben Buell; and Heidi (Burdick) and Rob Rondeau came together again to support Day Kimball Hospital by pledging to give a joint gift in memory of Morton and Mary Burdick, and Joseph, May and William Doblinger. “The Burdick Family’s generous gift will allow us to further advance the fetal monitoring technology in the Birthing Center,” said Peter D. Deary, chairman of Day Kimball Hospital’s Board of Directors. This significant donation will directly enhance the quality of patient care by bringing the benefits of new medical knowledge and technology to our maternal child patients. The new monitoring system will allow our staff to monitor both maternal and fetal vital signs including heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels, both internally and externally.” Native to northeastern Connecticut, the Burdick family has lived in the Town of Hampton for generations. Family member, Jean, retired from the University of Connecticut after 36 years of dedicated service, and her husband, Richard, operated a dairy and Christmas tree farm. It is through wise investments, and financial support from the rest of the family, that the Burdicks were able to gather their pledge for the new fetal monitoring system. “We think it is important for others to know that they can make a significant impact on our community by coming together to make a contribution,” said Richard and Jean Burdick. “Often times, people don’t make contributions because they are under the misconception that they don’t have enough to give. By making our gift to the Birthing Center, we hope to demystify this myth. People can make a difference, especially when they come together with family or friends. We are proud to know that the new fetal monitoring system will continue Day Kimball Hospital’s mission to provide quality care to the hundreds of mothers and babies born at the hospital every year.” If you or your family are interested in making a tax-deductible contribution to Day Kimball Hospital, a non-profit 501 (C) (3) organization, please contact Nancy Morrow, Vice President for Development, at 928-7141 or email nmorrow@daykimball.org.
