The International Association of Lions Clubs Donates $5000 to Day Kimball Diabetes Education

L-R: Bob Smanik, Day Kimball Hospital President & CEO, Ken Smith, Lions District Chairperson, Denise Sikorski,
RD, CD-N, Day Kimball Hospital, Julianne Shilosky,
District Governor, V.D.G. Armand LaFleur.

PUTNAM, CT –The International Association of Lions Clubs recently donated $5000 to Diabetes Education at Day Kimball Hospital.

Ken Smith, District 23C Chairperson said, “We donate to Day Kimball often. Because the main function of Lions around the world is vision and diabetes can cause blindness, we support the Diabetes Education Program.”

Day Kimball’s program teaches patients how to live with diabetes and is a resource for providers in the community to help manage patients’ diabetes. Gaining Education Recognition from the American Diabetes Association in 2006, the Day Kimball program includes instruction on blood sugar testing, medication management, nutrition and exercise information and works in collaboration with the patient’s primary care physician. The program features classes and information facilitated by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), a certified diabetes educator, a registered dietitian, an APRN in behavioral health and a masters prepared exercise physiologist.

Denise Sikorski, RD, CD-N, said, “This donation is very useful to the Diabetes Program for educational materials for adults and children. We really appreciate the Lions’ generosity.” Julianne Shilosky, District Governor explains, “This is a very worthwhile cause and we are happy to donate the money.”

To become a part of the Day Kimball Hospital Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, an individual must be referred by a primary care physician. In addition to the Self-Management Education Program, Day Kimball Hospital offers The Quiet Corner Diabetes Club which meets September through June and provides community education lectures on diabetes and related topics. For more information on either of these programs please call (860) 928-4344.
