Day Kimball Hospital Hosted Annual Business Meeting – Corporators were Invited to DISCOVER Day Kimball Hospital

PUTNAM, CTOn Thursday, January 11, Day Kimball Hospitalhosted its Annual Corporators’ Meeting at the Harvest Restaurant in Pomfret.  Following the theme of the recently released 2006 Annual Report, guests were invited to DISCOVER Day Kimball Hospital at this year’s business meeting.

At the meeting, corporators joined in a virtual tour of Day Kimball Hospital.  Guests were officially “admitted” to the event with patient wristbands, and then proceeded to their tables where they were greeted by wait staff in blue scrubs.  As the meeting was called to order, corporators found their programs in medical record folders.

Peter D. Deary, chairman of Day Kimball Hospital’s board of directors delivered the welcome and business meeting.  At the business meeting, corporators voted on and approved the minutes from the January 12, 2006 Corporators’ Meeting; accepted the slate of nominees for new corporators; accepted the slate of nominees for Day Kimball Hospital board of directors; accepted
the slate of nominees for Day Kimball Hospital board officers,
and approved corporate resolutions.

The following slate of nominees for corporators were voted on and elected:  Dr. and Mrs. John P. Athans of Dudley, Massachusetts; Mr. Marc S. Bates of Brooklyn; Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Pious of Hampton; Mrs. Donna M. Schroder of Moosup; Mr. & Mrs. Robert E. Smanik of Moosup; and Mr. and Mrs. Roman R. Wajer, Jr. of Woodstock.

The following slate of nominees for board of directors were voted and elected with terms expiring in December of 2009:  Rochelle Alix; Rev. Nancy Morrow; Elizabeth Kuszaj; and David Conrad.

The following slate of nominees for board officers were voted on and elected:  Peter D. Deary, chairman; John Miller, vice chairman; Jay Sinha, secretary; David Conrad, treasurer; and Michael Baum, MD, assistant secretary and assistant treasurer.

The business meeting was followed by the president’s report, delivered by Robert E. Smanik, FACHE, president and CEO of Day Kimball Hospital.  Mr. Smanik shared, “I am excited and honored to be given the opportunity to join Day Kimball Hospital at this time in its history.  I have found my expectations in the first few months here have been exceeded through the warmth and professionalism of the hospital staff.  My wife, Jinny, and I are actively working to relocate our home to Northeastern Connecticut and to settle our lives once again.”

After the president’s report, The Reverend Virginia Army, director of pastoral care and volunteer services, gave a presentation honoring all twelve employees of the month on behalf of the Employee Council.  Following her presentation,
Mr. Smanik announced Day Kimball Hospital’s 2006 employee of the year, Alex Williams, MS, RPT, of Rehabilitation Services.

In his remarks about the employee of the year, Mr. Smanik said, “A trusted source, this person is relied upon
by others for knowledge and skills, and consistently performs above expectation.  This individual is focused, and holds steadfast to our mission of providing for the healthcare needs of our community through clinical quality and customer service.  The 2006 employee of the year has created vital partnerships within the hospital environment and our community, having made contributions to the well-being of others.”

As the meeting continued, guests DISCOVERED Day Kimball through a virtual tour of the hospital.  This virtual presentation identified key patient areas within the hospital, and services located throughout the community.  Day Kimball representatives narrated the presentation according to geographic location.  These ambassadors included:  Patrice Bernier, a technologist in Day Kimball Hospital’s laboratory who brought guests through ground floor areas including patient access, emergency department, diagnostic imaging and rehabilitation services.   Marta Smallhorn, a registered nurse in the intensive care unit guided guests through the main
floor and areas such as pediatrics, pharmacy, laboratory and nutritional services. 

Moving up a floor, Dr. Douglas Waite, director of infectious disease and medical affairs gave a tour of the first floor including the medical/surgical unit, ambulatory care unit, the birthing center and the OB/GYN Center. 
On the second and third floors, Paul Chausse, director of patient accounts, guided guests through oncology, intensive care unit, surgery and Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut, a program of Day Kimball HomeCare. 

Concluding the tour, Jay Sinha, secretary of the board of directors, invited guests to learn more about Day Kimball Hospital’s nine satellite locations within the community including the Community Services Building, Hillside Professional Building, Schneider Center, Day Kimball HomeMakers and the Center for Healthy Aging, all in Putnam.  Other community resources included the Thompson Pediatric Center; the Day Kimball Hospital OB/GYN in Dayville; the Danielson Health Center; and the Plainfield Health Center.

To deliver the 2006 board recognition, Mr. Deary returned to the podium to honor Irving J. Schoppe for his ten-year commitment to Day Kimball Hospital’s board of directors. 

Mr. Schoppe served as assistant secretary in 1997; assistant treasurer from 1998-1999; vice chairman in 2003; chairman from 2004-2005; vice chairman and interim president and CEO in 2006.  For his steadfast support and dedication to the organization, Mr. Schoppe was also honored with the naming of the Day Kimball Hospital Irving J. Schoppe Board Room.  The annual meeting concluded with an invocation prepared by the Reverend Army; a meal; and closing remarks from Mr. Smanik.
