Day Kimball Hospital’s Emergency Department Goes Electronic with EmpowER

PUTNAM, CT- Day Kimball Hospital recently advanced the technological state of its Emergency Department by installing a computerized electronic medical record system that will greatly enhance patient care. This system, called EmpowER™, was designed by Chicago-based IT vendor ECDS (Emergency Care Documentation Systems) to electronically capture all patient information and store it within that patient’s chart. EmpowER™ will go live in Day Kimball Hospital Emergency Department on Tuesday, March 27, 2007.

Using EmpowER™, doctors and nurses can access patient information at any time rather than having to search for a paper chart. A patient’s visit to the Emergency Department is electronically tracked, which speeds up triage and registration, and reduces not only paperwork but also the amount of time patients spend in the waiting room. The system also mandates risk management in the form of automatic prompts, which remind doctors and nurses of drug allergies or potential drug-to-drug interactions—helping to ensure that the maximum standard in patient safety is always achieved. This is in sync with Day Kimball’s mission to consistently meet and exceed the needs of the neighbors they serve.

“Day Kimball Hospital is the fifth hospital in the state to go live with EmpowER™,” said Steven Wexler, MD and medical director of Day Kimball Hospital’s Emergency Department.  “Day Kimball chose to go with EmpowER™ because it is a computerized system with many benefits to patient care.  This new system will allow us to streamline communications within the ED, better organize how information is processed, open lines of communication with private practice physicians, and provide neater and more legible documentation.  EmpowER™ is so efficient, that as we come off of our learning curve, it will help us treat patients more quickly and reduce patient waiting times.”

Dr. Wexler continued, “EmpowER™ will provide greater safety for our patients.  Having computerized medical information avoids the delays involved in retrieving paper medical records, with the added benefit of giving physicians immediate access to important information.  As the director, this system affords me the ability to get real-time data, so I know what physicians and nurses are doing, how quickly patients are being treated, and develop solutions if necessary.”

Less than a third of the nation's hospital emergency and outpatient departments use electronic medical records, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This puts Day Kimball Hospital ahead of the game by bringing already state-of-the-art patient care to the next level by upping safety, increasing patient satisfaction, and reducing patient wait times through the technology of EmpowER™. ECDS is proud of this new partnership and looks forward to helping Day Kimball Hospital to further pursue its commitment to its patients and community.
