News & EventsIn honor of National Healthcare Observances, Day Kimball Hospital will Host an Endoscopy Open House in MarchPUTNAM, CT- In honor of Colon Cancer Awareness Month and Gastroenterology Nurses’ Day at the end of March, Day Kimball Hospital will host an Endoscopy Open House on Thursday, March 29 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The Open House will be in the endoscopy suites on the first floor of Day Kimball Hospital. Colonoscopy procedures, which screen for colon cancer are performed in Day Kimball Hospital’s Endoscopy Department. At the Open House, guests will have the opportunity to meet and greet with endoscopy staff, view the endoscopy facility, ask questions, see related videos and learn good colon health. Guests will also enjoy free refreshments and give-aways. “Day Kimball Hospital continues to be on the cutting edge with technology,” shared Robin Lazenby, RN, BSN, MS, CNOR, Director of Perioperative Services. “We currently offer a full-service Endoscopy Department with the newest equipment, knowledgeable staff, and excellent care. Just as important, patients can schedule procedures with little or no waiting time!” According to the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates, Inc., “Colorectal Cancer continues to be the second leading cancer killer for both men and women combined in the United States, even though it is 90 percent preventable and 90 percent treatable when detected early.” If you have a family history of colon cancer, polyps, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, weight loss, or if you are over the age of 50, consult your doctor regarding a colonoscopy screening. “According to 2005 data from the American Cancer Society, it was estimated that 145,290 Americans were diagnosed with colorectal cancer,” said Deb Corey, RN of Day Kimball Hospital’s Ambulatory Care Unit, and main organizer of the Endoscopy Open House. “Colon cancer can be prevented through early screening. Cancer of the colon and rectum are the third most common type of cancer in the U.S., and the second highest cause of cancer death. So many people are not aware of how deadly this disease is. I encourage people with risk factors to speak with their doctor about screenings for this potentially curable disease.” To schedule a colonoscopy, a referral from your primary care physician is required.
