News & EventsGuest Bartender Night Raises More Than $1,700 for Oncology Fund
PUTNAM, CT – On Wednesday, March 7, Day Kimball Hospital, in conjunction with community member, Obie Hewitt, hosted a guest bartender night at J.D Cooper’s Sports Pub in Putnam. All proceeds from the evening, $1,776 in total, were donated to the Day Kimball Hospital Oncology Fund. Event organizer, Obie Hewitt, noted a substantial donation of $350 given by David Haight of Danielson. The Oncology Fund is used to purchase new patient equipment, and is being earmarked for future renovations to the Oncology/ "This celebrity bartending fundraiser was a big success,” said Dr. Jeffrey Gordon, Medical Director of the Rose Bove LaRose Oncology/Hematology Clinic. “Over $1,700 was raised for patient care services in the Hematology-Oncology Clinic at Day Kimball Hospital. It was wonderful to see the large turnout of Day Kimball employees and staff. This once again shows the huge spirit of generosity and caring that exists here at our hospital and in the community of Northeastern Connecticut! Obie and Lori Hewitt, and their family and friends, deserve a big thank you for sponsoring this fundraiser. Thank you as well to each of our celebrity bartenders and to the staff of J.D. Cooper's Restaurant." Along with his family, Obie Hewitt, organized his first guest bartender night last year in memory of his father-in-law, Ernest Reali, who passed away of cancer in November of 2001. In addition to guest bartender events, Hewitt also organizes an annual golf tournament in August in memory of his father-in-law at the Foster Country Club in Foster, Rhode Island. “I had always heard what cancer does to a person and their family, but I never witnessed its devastating affects until my father-in-law was diagnosed,” said Obie Hewitt, event organizer. “After my wife, Lori, and I lost her father, we decided that we had to do something to help others in our community with cancer. After visiting Day Kimball Hospital, I was inspired to raise money for the oncology department. Cancer can affect any of us, and I want to help ensure that our community hospital can best serve patients and their families.” The evening went from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., and the night’s line-up of guest bartenders included Barbara Chubbuck, Dr. Jeffrey Gordon and Dr. Ronald Franzino from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. The 6:00 hour included Gary O’ Osbrey, Roger LaFrancois and Ronald Coderre. The last hour went out with a bang with Billy Carpenter, John Schiffner, Burt Elliot and David Haight. “Only in its second year, the Obie Hewitt Guest Bartender Night more than tripled its proceeds from last year’s event,” said Victoria L. Bates, Interim Director for Philanthropy. “Obie is a man of great character, who is committed to fighting cancer in his local community. With his efforts, we are able to improve patient quality and comfort.” For information, or to make a donation to the Day Kimball Hospital Oncology fund, please call Philanthropy and Corporate Communications at (860) 928-7141.
