News & EventsDay Kimball Hospital Laboratory Receives Accreditation from College of American PathologistsPUTNAM, CT- The Day Kimball Hospital Laboratory was recently awarded an accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent on-site inspection. The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program. “The staff of the Day Kimball Hospital medical laboratory are conscientious and professional, and provide quality, reliable laboratory service to the hospital, its medical staff, and the patients of the surrounding medical community,” said Dr. John Athans, chief pathologist and medical director of Day Kimball’s laboratory. “The laboratory staff are to be congratulated and thanked for their efforts in successfully passing the recent biannual laboratory inspection, and receiving accreditation from the College of American Pathologists.” During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff’s qualifications, the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory. This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for the laboratory’s patients. “The lab at Day Kimball Hospital has the same equipment that you would expect to see in any large tertiary health care center. Our staff are certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and maintains continuing education credits to provide this high level of care,” said John Hall, Director of the hospital’s laboratory. “As members of the community, we see our family members and friends having their blood drawn. Each discussion about improvement begins with the phrase, ‘what would be best for the patient, or if this was my child, how would I want her treated?’ We take our responsibility to the community very seriously.” The College of American Pathologists is a medical society serving nearly 16,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world. It is the world’s largest association composed exclusively of pathologists and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. The CAP is an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective medical care. Day Kimball Hospital is a non-profit, 103-bed community hospital in Putnam. Day Kimball has been in operation since 1894, and provides for the health care needs of Northeastern Connecticut, and nearby Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
