Day Kimball Hospital Offers Susan Chilkott Memorial Scholarship

PUTNAM, CT – The Day Kimball Hospital Philanthropy Committee is offering the 2008 Susan Chilkott Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is given annually to individuals who reside in the thirteen towns of Northeastern Connecticut and have an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare. The thirteen towns include: Ashford, Brooklyn, Canterbury, Chaplin, Eastford, Hampton, Killingly, Plainfield, Pomfret, Putnam, Sterling, Thompson or Woodstock or a family member of a Day Kimball Healthcare Employee or a Day Kimball Healthcare Employee not eligible for tuition reimbursement.

Susan Chilkott was the Director of Nursing for Day Kimball Hospital from 1937 to 1959. During this time, she also served the Hospital as a Director of Operations for many special service departments. The scholarship was created in 1987 to honor Ms. Chilkott for her dedication to Day Kimball Hospital. 

Last year’s scholarship recipients were: Krystyna Chester of Danielson, James Clark, Jr. of Woodstock, Amanda Clarke of Putnam, Yelena Motovilov of Woodstock, Jacqueline Norman of Brooklyn and Beth Thayer of Woodstock.

The applicant must be a high school or preparatory school graduate and receive acceptance into an accredited program leading to one of the following careers: Medical Technologist, Occupational Therapist, Registered Nurse, Registered Nurse – Advanced Practice, Pharmacist, Physical Therapist, Registered Dietician, Registered Radiographer, Respiratory Therapist and Speech Pathologist.

Final applicants must appear for a personal interview before the scholarship committee and the scholarship is merit based. The application period begins on February 15, 2008 and ends on April 15, 2008. Online applications are available at www.daykimball.org.

Day Kimball Hospital is a non-profit, 103-bed community hospital in Putnam.  Day Kimball has been in operation since 1894, and provides for the health care needs of Northeastern Connecticut, and nearby Massachusetts and Rhode Island.  Day Kimball is served by more than 1,000 employees and more than 100 physicians, dentists and medical specialists.

In coordination with its affiliated health centers in Danielson, Dayville, Plainfield and Thompson, Day Kimball offers acute and general medical/surgical care, a 24-hour Emergency and Prompt Care Department, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, cardiopulmonary and psychiatric programs.
