News & EventsDay Kimball Hospital Continues to Make Strides in Diabetes Education Program
PUTNAM, CT – The Day Kimball Hospital Diabetes Self-Management Education Program has made significant changes to better help serve those with or at risk for diabetes in the community. Day Kimball’s Diabetes Education Medical Director, Lee S. Wesler, MD of the Medical Center of Northeast Connecticut, recently welcomed Virginia Chartier, APRN, as the new Diabetic Educator. Dr. Wesler plans to continue the program’s outreach to community members and provide useful information about diabetes management. "Its important to understand both diabetes and its precursors, pre-diabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome,” said Dr. Wesler. “Our program’s goal is to aggressively treat and prevent these serious illnesses.” Day Kimball’s program teaches patients how to live with diabetes and is a resource for providers in the community to help manage patients’ diabetes. Gaining Education Recognition from the American Diabetes Association in 2006, the Day Kimball program includes instruction on blood sugar testing, medication management, nutrition and exercise information and works in collaboration with the patient’s primary care physician. The program features classes and information facilitated by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), a certified diabetes educator, a registered dietitian, an APRN in behavioral health and a masters prepared exercise physiologist. “We feel that it is very important to continue making strides with the diabetes education program,” said Virginia Chartier, APRN. “We want to reach out to community members and begin to act as a liaison for physicians to provide information for everyone who needs and wants it. I’d like to keep my approach simple in the way that we educate about diabetes management.” To become a part of the Day Kimball Hospital Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, an individual must be referred by a primary care physician. In addition to the Self-Management Education Program, Day Kimball Hospital offers The Quiet Corner Diabetes Club which meets September through June and provides community education lectures on diabetes and related topics.
