Day Kimball Hospital Announces New Diabetes Educator,
Virginia Chartier, APRN

Virginia Chartier, APRN, has accepted
the position of diabetes educator at
Day Kimball Hospital.

PUTNAM, CTDay Kimball Hospital announces that Virginia Chartier, APRN, has accepted the position of diabetes educator in the Diabetes Self-Management and Education Program.  Chartier started her career at Day Kimball Hospital six years ago as a registered nurse in the Hospital’s Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. In 2004, Chartier earned her Master’s Degree from the University of Connecticut as an advanced practice registered nurse with a concentration in primary care, under the clinical supervision of Dr. Raja Fattaleh.  Chartier is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and is currently working on earning accreditation as a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). In 2000, she was recognized by the Connecticut League of Nursing.

“I am enthusiastic about my new position in Day Kimball’s Diabetes Management Program,” said Chartier. “I’m working with a great team, and there is a lot of potential for growth. Diabetes education is desperately needed because so many people are affected by the disease. I live in this community and look forward to partnering with physicians and patients for quality diabetes care.”

Accredited by the American Diabetes Association, Day Kimball Hospital’s Diabetes Program goes through a rigorous review process.  It must meet stringent national care standards and illustrate excellence and quality of a diabetes self-management program.  This certification lets the community know that they can expect the most current care and useful diabetes-related information.

"I am pleased to have Virginia join the Diabetes Management and Education Program,” said Christine Vallee, director of Physician Practices. “She not only brings her skills and expertise as a nurse practitioner, but also brings enthusiasm and initiative to grow the program. I look forward to working with her in the year ahead to expand this much needed program for the community."

“The program is important because it will help people take better care of themselves,” said Chartier.  “Education for the patient and family provides them with the tools to self-manage diabetes, as a partner
with their doctor.  The goal is to avoid the many complications associated with diabetes.”

The Diabetes Self-Management and Education Program provides patients with one-on-one instruction as well as group classes.  It teaches about blood sugar testing, medication management, nutrition and exercise, and works with the patient’s primary care physician.  In addition to Chartier, the program staffs Dr. Lee Wesler, medical director and internist at the Medical Center of Northeast Connecticut in Dayville; Denise Sikorski, RD, program dietician; and a support team.  A physician referral is required for this program.

The Diabetes Self-Management and Education Program also offers the “Quiet Corner Diabetes Club,” and provides monthly community education lectures on diabetes and related topics at Day Kimball Hospital. For more information and hours, call 928-4344.

Day Kimball Hospital is a non-profit, 103-bed community hospital in Putnam.  Day Kimball has been in operation since 1894, and provides for the health care needs of Northeastern Connecticut, and nearby Massachusetts and Rhode Island.  Day Kimball is served by more than 1,000 employees and more than 125 physicians and medical specialists.
