Professional Dance Company to Perform “Struggle/Free” to Benefit Day Kimball Hospital Oncology

PUTNAM, CT On April 5th at 7:30 p.m. Guidance, Inc., a professional dance company based in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, will host a performance at Pomfret School in the Hard Auditorium to benefit Day Kimball Hospital Oncology and Pomfret School’s participation in the Relay for Life program. The April 5th performance will be followed by a reception, hosted by the school. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served, along with raffle prizes collected by the Day Kimball Well-Wishers. The price for this performance is $15/ticket. A second performance will take place at Pomfret School on April 6th at 2:00 p.m. for $10/ticket.

The benefit is Guidance, Inc.’s way of showing appreciation to Day Kimball Hospital as well as raising cancer awareness.  Pomfret School is sponsoring the event as a way for students to enhance their participation in Relay for Life, their annual student-run fundraiser for cancer awareness. The event was created around the story of a man by the name of Tony Guglietti, 32, currently residing in Lunenberg, MA, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in June of 2007. Dr. Baum of Day Kimball Hospital performed surgery and Guglietti underwent six months of chemotherapy under the care of Dr. Jeffrey Gordon and Day Kimball’s Oncology staff.

“Tony and Ellen Gugliettis’ dance performance fundraiser for Day Kimball Hospital's Cancer Center is a generous and selfless event,” said Dr. Jeffrey Gordon, Medical Director of Hematology-Oncology Services.  “This couple has been devoted to each other as Tony has battled colon cancer. Their optimism and joy for life strongly show that cancer can affect one's body, but it cannot dominate one's spirit.  The Gugliettis’ strength provides support for others undergoing treatment for cancer.  This fundraiser will directly help us in Day Kimball Hospital's Cancer Center do what we do best: treat cancer and care for people with cancer and blood disorders.”

Ellen, the Dance Director at Pomfret School, said of her husband’s progress, “Tony is a rare person. Nothing really upsets him or gets him down. You will see in his choreography more of what bothered him during Chemotherapy than anyone will ever know because he never complains. He is doing really well right now and has lots of energy.” When asked how Tony felt about his entire journey, he responded, “God was really nice to me.”

Both Tony and Ellen have surrounded their lives with dancing and choreographing. Pomfret School has generously contributed the use of its facility as well as raffle prizes for the event. Tony is a graduate of NYU Tisch School of Arts as well as an exterior/interior painter, and Ellen graduated from Adelphi University. Tony, Ellen and their friend Amanda Page had a passion for choreography and thus began a modern dance company by the name of Guidance, Inc. The company, with new local members Jodi Leigh Allen and Amanda Doyle, continue to perform throughout New England.

“We hope that this performance of “STRUGGLE/FREE” will inspire people to keep the hope alive and give to this very important fundraising event,” said the Gugliettis. “We would also like to thank Day Kimball, Dr. Baum and the entire Oncology staff for their patience, caring hearts, and loving support.”  Ellen’s choreographed piece in the performance was fully inspired by the three Day Kimball nurses who cared for Tony and Ellen during this difficult time in their lives. “Nurses are the hands of God,” said Ellen. Day Kimball Hospital’s Jane Burlingame, RN, said of the couple, “Tony and Ellen were a joy to care for…always loving toward each other and kind and interested in those around them. I liked Tony’s spirit.  He continued to referee hockey games (a passion of his) throughout his treatment and suffered from more than one hockey puck injury.  My usual greeting was ‘Did you get hit with any pucks this week?’”

According to the National Cancer Institute, Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women and the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality in both men and women in the United States.

Ticket sales will be split evenly to benefit the Day Kimball Oncology fund and the Relay for Life, while all raffle ticket sales will benefit Day Kimball Oncology. To purchase tickets please call (860) 963-6384 or (860) 963-6129.
