News & EventsRegional Health Partners Plan HealthQuest ‘08 Symposium to Promote Adoption of Healthy Environments
PUTNAM, CT – Day Kimball Hospital and Daniel’s Pharmacy will sponsor a day-long event designed to explore ways that northeastern Connecticut communities, schools, and workplaces can adopt healthier cultures in order to The two organizations, in partnership with the Northeast “We want to give our communities, schools, and workplaces the tools they need to promote and sustain wellness for their residents, students, and employees,” said Elaine Turner, Community Education Specialist for Day Kimball Hospital. “A good starting point was to get many of the key decision-makers in one room to discuss the barriers in creating healthy cultures and how we can overcome them, as well as recognize the positive model practices that are already in place in northeastern Connecticut.” Owner and Pharmacy Manager of Daniel’s pharmacy, Daniel Fiore, RPH, said of the event, “The local pharmacy has always been, and continues to be, an important link to the community for education and ideas to achieve and maintain an improved level of health. Pharmacists are health professionals who are uniquely accessible to the community and are in a position to advise patients or customers usually at no cost to the patient. Fiore continues, “Personally I have used exercise, meditation, massage, breathing techniques and even music to increase my sense of well being and improve my stamina and level of health. I feel that it takes many different approaches in one's life to optimize mental and physical health. I also feel that mental and physical health are intertwined and find it important to address all things that can affect one's life to optimize one's health.” Discussion sessions will be lead by a number of community representatives. NDDH Director of Health, Patricia Beckenhaupt and Town of Putnam Community Development Director Delpha Very will speak about community wellness. Delpha Very will focus on the positive planning and development initiatives that the town of Putnam has taken in providing walking trails, street lights, sidewalks, cultural programs, farmer’s markets, and proposed projects for a community garden and a community center. “We realize that many of the components of better health and wellness already exist in our communities,” said Beckenhaupt. “It’s a matter of connecting ideas and opportunities to build the infrastructure that truly defines a ‘healthy community.’ No one agency can do this alone…we need to work together if we expect to bring about environmental, policy, and behavioral change.” Jeff Paul, President and an owner of Whitcraft, LLC of Eastford, will present alongside Turner on workplace wellness. Whitcraft has 280 employees and is a producer of complex sheet metal fabrication and precision machining for the aerospace industry. Paul will share his company’s successes in implementing a workplace wellness program that has had a positive impact on employee productivity, morale, and health-related indices such as blood pressure, smoking, and exercise. Additional presenters include Dr. Mary Conway, Superintendent of Plainfield Schools, and Dr. Marc Cerrone, Pediatrician for Day Kimball Hospital Pediatric Centers, who will discuss school wellness including topics of diversity, nutrition, and the effects of obesity and inactivity on student performance. Cerrone also serves as a physician for the Plainfield school district. Following the presentations, attendees will participate in their choice of three guided workgroup sessions to develop solutions and recommendations to share with the larger group. Dr. Bernie Siegel, an expert on mind-body medicine who has authored nine books on the healing power of love, laughter, and expression will deliver the keynote address. A book signing will follow his presentation. The event is being funded by Daniel’s Pharmacy in Danielson in partnership with Day Kimball Hospital. The event is supported in part by United Natural Foods, Steve and Marge Townsend, and the Northeastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce.
