News & EventsDay Kimball Hospital Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center Joins The Great Garage Band Reunion in Fundraiser
PUTNAM, CT – In an event titled “The Heart of Rock ‘n’ Roll Keeps on Beatin’” The Great Garage Band Reunion (GGBR) will host a concert on February 23, to benefit Day Kimball Hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Rehab Center. From 8:00pm to Midnight, the band will play tunes from the 60’s and 70’s at The Gold Eagle at the Laurel House. Jim Milliard and Tory Averna are two of the original band members who recently became part of the cardiopulmonary rehab ‘family’ at Day Kimball. Last year, Milliard and Averna both suffered heart attacks within five weeks of each other. For 12 weeks, Day Kimball’s Cardiopulmonary Rehab facility became a large part of their recovery. “I really enjoyed going to rehab,” said Tory Averna. “I was nervous at first, but the employees are so warm and welcoming that it was easy. It was a workout that didn’t feel like one and I looked forward to going.” Milliard and Averna mentioned that they were so pleased with the experience and results they achieved from Day Kimball’s Cardiopulmonary Rehab center that they wanted to put on a concert for the benefit of the center. The Great Garage Band Reunion had been playing around the area for years benefiting different organizations, raising nearly $100,000 to date. Both Milliard and Averna are grateful to be playing in the band again. Currently with 12 band members, The Great Garage Band Reunion enjoys drawing a crowd and playing high energy rock and roll most of all. “We put a lot of energy in when we play,” said Milliard. “Sometimes I forget that I had a heart attack. I feel great and am thankful to Day Kimball’s Cardiopulmonary Rehab Program.” In speaking about the same topic, Averna confides, “When I left [Day Kimball’s program] I felt like I had never had a heart attack.” Beginning in 2002, The Great Garage Band Reunion came together with four of the original band members intact. The original band began in 1963 and was on hiatus from 1966-2002. As a self proclaimed horn band with six lead vocalists and many new members and friends, the GGBR boasts of an enthusiastic and energetic spirit with a love for drawing crowds. “I feel fortunate that we can draw a crowd and that there are people that support us,” said Milliard. “We are hoping to make this benefit for the Cardiopulmonary Rehab program an annual event.” Proceeds from the performance will go towards a new recumbent bicycle in the cardio rehab facility. The concert will include hors d’oeuvres, cash bar and endless dancing. “Come and have a good time,” said Averna, as Milliard added, “And bring your dancing shoes! We have a few surprises in store for that night.” Space is limited for “The Heart of Rock ‘n’ Roll that Keeps on Beatin’.” For tickets contact the Day Kimball Philanthropy office at 928-7141 or the cardiopulmonary rehab center at 963-6315.
