Day Kimball Hospital Hosted National Group Practice Week Celebration

PUTNAM, CTOn Wednesday, January 23, Day Kimball Hospital Physician Practices Department hosted a breakfast program in honor of the fifth annual National Medical Group Practice Week. Always the fourth week of January, National Medical Group Practice Week is being observed from January 21 through January 25 this year. According to the Medical Group Management Association, the purpose of this celebration is to promote awareness and understanding of medical group practice as the premier form of health care delivery. This year’s theme is celebrating Patient-Centered Care!

At Day Kimball Hospital, the Physician Practices Department consists of the Pediatric Centers in Putnam, Thompson and Plainfield; OB/GYN Centers in Putnam and Dayville; the Geriatric Assessment Program; and Day Kimball’s Oncology, Pulmonology and Diabetes programs. In total, the department employees a staff of 73:  16 physicians, five nurse practitioners, one registered dietician, 14 nurses and 36 support staff.

Several staff members were recognized for their outstanding achievements including, Cindy Laprise, RN, certification in oncology nursing; Denise Sikorski, RD, certification in childhood obesity; Dr. Erica Kesselman for her commitment to the OB/GYN Centers; and Annette Konicki, APRN, for her continual support of our OB/GYN Centers.

At its breakfast program, Physician Practices Director, Christine Vallee, said, “On behalf of Day Kimball Hospital, I would like to thank all of you for your dedication to quality care and commitment to our community and hospital.  During 2007, your successes translated into high patient satisfaction rates. All Physician Practices Departments scored in the 88th percentile and above.”

During her presentation, Vallee also touched on Physician Practices’ 2008 initiatives to further improve healthcare delivery in Northeastern Connecticut. Some of these initiatives include program enhancement to the Diabetes Management Program, as well as an obesity grant in the Putnam and Thompson Public Schools. The Geriatric Assessment Program is moving from its home at St. Mary Church in Putnam to a more spacious and accessible space at the Day Kimball Hospital building on Dog Hill Road in Dayville. Physician Practices also strives to add nutrition consultations in Oncology and more pediatric partnerships and collaborations within the community.

Following Vallee’s presentation, Day Kimball Hospital President and CEO, Robert E. Smanik, FACHE, addressed the Physician Practices staff, “One of the key reasons I came to Day Kimball is because I believe in the community hospital, organized under a local Board of Directors, and its mission to provide quality care available to all in our community. I am proud to share that you have truly exceeded my expectations in your healthcare delivery to the communities of Northeastern Connecticut. As we celebrate National Medical Group Practice Week, I thank you for your tireless work and am pleased to be apart of this team.”
