PUTNAM, CTFaye Knight of Brooklyn, along with several of her family members, recently shaved their heads to prepare for Knight’s chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer.

On September 28, 2007, Knight underwent a lumpectomy and later had a port put in for her treatment following the surgery. Knight will undergo a 52-week treatment protocol of chemotherapy.

“I wanted to make shaving my head something positive and meaningful,” said Knight. “Shaving my head marked the beginning of my breast cancer fundraising effort which raises money for Day Kimball Oncology.”

Members of Knight’s family also took part in shaving their heads, as well as her daughter, Jennifer Guthinger, who resides in Virginia. “This is a way for my daughter to feel close to me and to show her support from far away,” said Knight.  Knight revealed that she is counting on the “three F’s,” friends, family and faith to serve as her support system through this journey.

In speaking of the most pertinent feelings about her diagnosis, Knight said, “When you hear the words ‘you have cancer,’ that’s all you hear at the moment. It takes a while to realize that it’s not a death sentence.”

Knight’s prognosis and attitude are both positive. She went on to mention that the support of Dr. Ronald Franzino and Dr. Jeffrey Gordon at Day Kimball has been extremely helpful to her.

To help mark the beginning of her journey to become a breast cancer survivor, Knight began this breast cancer fundraiser. Donations can be made in Knight’s name to Day Kimball Oncology.
