PUTNAM, CTDay Kimball Hospital’s President & CEO Robert E. Smanik, FACHE, and Marc Cerrone, MD were honored guests at Plainfield Central School’s celebration of the Feb. 2nd “Connecticut Loves to Read Day” on Friday, February 1st. Over 25 community leaders participated in the reading day by choosing excerpts from their favorite selections and sharing them with students from grades six through eight.

“This is a great program and it’s inspiring to see community members and professionals take the time to read and share a piece of themselves with today’s youth,” said Robert Smanik. “I am honored to be a part of this day and really enjoyed spending time with the students.”

The program began with a welcome from the school principal, Mr. Jerry Davis and a presentation of sample book talks by two PCS students. The honored guests were then escorted to their designated classrooms, by National Junior Honor Society students and those who give assistance in the library.

Mr. Smanik read excerpts from two of his favorite novels, Winterdance, by Gary Paulsen and Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin . Guests were also able to speak to students about themselves and answer questions. School Principal Jerry Davis was extremely pleased with the school’s reading day program sharing, “It is wonderful to have community members reading to the kids today. It’s a real pleasure for us to welcome these professionals into our school and give them a chance to interact with the great staff and students we have here.”

Dr. Marc Cerrone of Day Kimball’s Pediatric Center was also an honored guest at the reading day. His selection was, The Hitchhiker, by Anthony Horowitz from the collection entitled “More Horror Horowitz.” This is the second year that Bob Smanik and Dr. Cerrone participated in “Connecticut Loves to Read Day” at Plainfield Central School. “I was excited to participate for the second time in Connecticut Loves to Read Day,” said Dr. Cerrone.  “I enjoy sharing my love of reading with the students, and hope to spark an interest by them to do more independent reading outside of school requirements.”

Guests were served breakfast after reading and were able to mix and mingle with other honored guests. Plainfield Central School has been a participant for three years in the “Connecticut Loves to Read Day.”
