News & EventsDay Kimball Hospital Concludes Small Changes Big Difference Healthy Lifestyle Information Program
PUTNAM, CT – On January 24, Day Kimball Hospital concluded its Small Changes Big Difference: 6 Weeks to a Healthier Life pilot program. All participants were invited to The Harvest, in Pomfret, for a final session and a healthy dinner to celebrate their accomplishments and recap the information they’d received over the six-week program. Mr. and Mrs. Kern were two of the original 25 participants involved in the program. “It was a very interesting program;” said Mrs. Kern as Mr. Kern continued, “It’s refreshing to see the Hospital take a proactive approach to disease prevention rather than a reactive one.” The program was offered to community members and Hospital employees free of charge. A screening process comprised of a short interview kicked off the search for 25 dedicated participants in September, followed by the first session on November 1, 2007. The introduction session consisted of presentations by Dr. Jane Doyle and Dr. Paul Matty of Day Kimball Hospital about nutrition, exercise and general guidelines for healthy living. The next four sessions included two presentations by Dr. Alison Monette, focusing on nutrition and improving health through naturopathic medicine as well as two sessions at Midtown Fitness in Putnam, presented by Alex Williams, RPT and Amy Williams of Midtown Fitness on exercise and proper fitness techniques. Participants were able to learn about nutrition and food choices through a trip to Big Y® World Class Market in Danielson as well as through lectures with Dr. Monette. For the fitness sessions, participants were able to use the machines at Midtown Fitness with Alex Williams, Amy Williams and other Midtown Fitness staff present to offer guidance on the machines and general exercise tips. Participants gave extremely positive feedback and there have been many requests for more Small Changes programs. Participant Lisa Hendricks said, “This was a great program for me. I had the knowledge but I wasn’t doing anything with it. The presenters were great and very enthusiastic about sharing the information that they had.” Because of the overwhelmingly positive response Day Kimball Hospital has received regarding this program, the Hospital is looking into running similar programs in the future.
