Registered nurses, Eric Bates and Sharon Verraneault of the ED were also inducted into the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International.

PUTNAM, CTFour members of Day Kimball Hospital’s Emergency Department Staff were recently elected membership into the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International.  Three of the staff members are registered nurses, Eric Bates, Laura Stonebreaker and Sharon Verraneault.  Tammy Maerkel is currently a unit receptionist/patient care technician, and is enrolled in a nursing program at Worcester State College.

Eric Bates is a graduate of Rhode Island College and a member of the Delta Upsilon Chapter.  Tammy Maerkel is a member of the Iota Phi-At-Large Chapter, along with Laura Stonebreaker, a graduate of Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA.  Sharon Verraneault is a graduate of St. Joseph College in Standish, Maine and is a member of the Kappa Zeta-at-Large Chapter.

The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, one of the largest international nursing organizations, works to foster, develop and connect nurse scholars and leaders worldwide to improve health care. The honor society promotes nursing excellence through its initiatives in research, leadership, an electronic library, programming and publications and develops and distributes nursing knowledge for use in practice.

“To be inducted into Sigma Theta Tau means so much to you as a nurse and to be recognized for what you offer clinically to your patients and community,” said Ann Dion, RN, MS, MBA, director of Emergency Services.  “This is one of the highest honors a nurse can receive, and I am extremely proud of my staff who have been elected to the International Honor Society, this is truly recognition on a global level.”

Membership to the honor society is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, and to nurse leaders who demonstrate exceptional achievement in nursing. The undergraduate student must have at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, be in the upper 35 percent of his/her graduating class, have completed at least one-half of the nursing curriculum to qualify for membership and meet the expectation of academic integrity.

“We are indeed fortunate to have staff inducted into the International Honor Society,” said Sandra Bucci, MS, RN, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services. “This addition enhances the professionalism of nursing staff at Day Kimball Hospital and adds to the various certifications that have already been achieved by staff in various departments. Our patients can be assured that they are cared for by skilled professionals in all units of the hospital.”
