News & EventsDay Kimball Hospital Announces Toothpaste Recall to CommunityPUTNAM, CT – Day Kimball Hospital was recently notified of a toothpaste recall. The recall is for 2.75 oz. packages of toothpaste which are manufactured under a variety of brand names, including “Dawn Mist.” The “Dawn Mist” manufacturer is based in China, and supplies hospitals and other industries with toothpaste. The toothpaste is being recalled because it may contain trace amounts of Diethylene Glycol (DEG), which is used in antifreeze. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it “is not aware of any U.S. reports of poisonings from toothpaste containing DEG. However, [the FDA] is concerned about potential risks from chronic exposure to DEG and exposure to DEG in certain populations, such as children and individuals with kidney or liver disease.” The FDA continued that while toothpaste is not intended to be swallowed, it is concerned about unintentional swallowing or ingestion of toothpaste containing DEG. The manufacturer’s voluntary recall is “being conducted in cooperation with the FDA.” “At Day Kimball Hospital, we have taken this recall seriously by collecting and disposing of all remaining ‘Dawn Mist’ toothpaste,” said Robert E. Smanik, FACHE, President and CEO. “We have discontinued ordering more of the product, and are alerting the Northeastern Connecticut communities accordingly. Our staff is to be commended for their swift efforts, and ensuring our patients’ safety and quality of care.” Even though the risk of exposure to DEG is felt to be low, Day Kimball Hospital is urging community members to immediately dispose of any toothpaste taken home from the hospital from January to June of 2007, or any purchased toothpaste labeled as “Made in China.” If you have any further questions regarding this toothpaste recall, please visit the FDA’s website at http://www.fda.gov/opacom/7alerts.html. If you have any medical concerns or symptoms, you are encouraged to contact your primary care physician. In coordination with its affiliated health centers in Danielson, Dayville, Plainfield and Thompson, Day Kimball offers acute and general medical/surgical care, a 24-hour Emergency and Prompt Care Department, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, oncology, hematology, cardiopulmonary and psychiatric programs. |
