News & EventsDay Kimball Hospital Celebrates Healing and Hope with Cancer Survivors and Actor Brian Dennehy
PUTNAM, CT – Sunday, September 23 marked Day Kimball Hospital’s second annual Celebration of Healing and Hope at The Harvest Restaurant in Pomfret. Actor, Brian Dennehy attended the event and spoke to over 170 guests about his own battle with prostate cancer. “This celebration was inspirational to all those in attendance as cancer affects not only the patient but also his/her family and friends,” Day Kimball Hospital President & CEO Robert E. Smanik said. “From a calendar featuring local cancer survivors and a patchwork quilt signed by patients, to a poignant keynote address by actor Brian Dennehy, this year’s event was a memorable one that exemplifies the compassionate care that Day Kimball provides to our community.” As hot hors d’oeuvres were passed around, speakers Peter Deary, Chair of the DKH Board of Directors, Robert Smanik, Dr. John Graham, Urologist and member of the DKH Board of Directors, Dr. Michael Baum, Surgeon and member of the DKH Board of Directors, and Dr. Jeffrey Gordon, Medical Director of Oncology and Hematology, took the podium to share their stories and inspirational words. “What a celebration, said Barbara Chubbuck, Administrative Assistant for the ICU and laboratory at Day Kimball Hospital and a member of the DKH Well-Wishers. “They say laughter is the best medicine and there was plenty of that going around. This event is what it’s all about; letting patients and their families know that people care and share in their time of need...in whatever way we can.” This year, each guest received a special gift of a 2008 calendar with photographs of cancer survivors treated at Day Kimball, taken by Dr. Richard Griffith, anesthesiologist. Additional calendars are for sale in the Hospital gift shop and in the oncology unit for $10. Each cancer survivor received a raffle ticket at registration and over twenty items were raffled off, including a blue tooth headset, hand-knitted blankets, baskets, a hand-made scarf, jewelry, gift certificates and the pumpkin centerpieces on each table. Following the raffle, a dessert and coffee bar was available as guests mingled. More than 100 guests attended last year’s celebration, located at the Hospital. This year’s event drew a larger crowd and even more are expected to attend next year. Day Kimball Hospital is a non-profit, 103-bed community hospital in Putnam.
