Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut to Celebrate Annual Tree of Life Ceremonies

PUTNAM, CTHospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut will celebrate its eighth annual “Tree of Life” ceremonies on Sunday, December 9th.  Ceremonies will include the lighting of a holiday tree, reflection, caroling, and a post-ceremony reception with refreshments. Ceremonies begin at 5 p.m., and trees will be lit at 5:15 p.m.   Ceremonies will be held in Brooklyn at Creamery Brook Retirement Village; in Danielson at Davis Park; in Plainfield at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; in Pomfret at the junctions of Routes 44 and 169; in Putnam at St. Mary Church; in Thompson at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church; and in Woodstock at Roseland Cottage. The public is invited to attend.

“The Tree of Life ceremonies are a time to honor the work of Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut and remember the loved ones we have lost,” said Carol Emmerthal, RN, BSN, Associate Director of Hospice. “Through the generosity of our community we can provide our patients with the special extras that they could otherwise not afford. The Tree of Life event helps us to brighten the spirits of patients in our program.”

This year’s chairperson is Warren J. Rosenberg, whose fiancée, Denise McNally, died at the age of 53 after a two-year battle with renal cancer. “In November of 2006, Denise ran out of treatment options and Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut was there for her and her loved ones,” said Rosenberg. “Hospice's team of caregivers honored Denise's dignity and fierce determination.”

Rosenberg says of the Tree of Life Ceremonies, “Hospice's Annual Tree of Life is a celebration of the hope and light Hospice and Palliative care brings to families' homes in the midst of suffering, illness, grief, and death. It is also a key fund-raising event for the organization and these monies are used to support patient care and services.”

To sponsor a loved one through the Tree of Life Program, call Day Kimball Hospital’s Philanthropy office at (860) 928-7141.  A white light donation is $5.00; orange light is $10.00; green light is $20.00; blue light is $50.00; and the red light is $100 or more.  Checks may be made payable to “Hospice” and mailed to: Tree of Life, P.O. Box 632, Putnam, CT 06260.

Gifts received prior to December 3, 2007 will be acknowledged in the Tree of Life Program, but gifts are accepted throughout the year for the Tree of Life Program.
