Susan Chilkott Memorial Healthcare Professionals’ Scholarship Guidelines
The scholarship was named for Susan Chilkott, the director of nursing at Day Kimball Hospital from 1937 to 1959. During this time, she also served as a director of operations for many special service departments.
In 1987, in recognition of Miss Chilkott’s illustrious and dedicated career, the Day Kimball Hospital Philanthropy Committee founded the Susan Chilkott Scholarship, which is presented annually to individuals from Northeastern Connecticut who are pursuing careers in healthcare fields.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
The applicant must meet the following criteria:
- A resident of Ashford, Brooklyn, Canterbury, Chaplin, Eastford, Hampton, Killingly, Plainfield, Pomfret, Putnam, Sterling, Thompson or Woodstock or a family member of a Day Kimball Healthcare employee or a Day Kimball Healthcare Employee not eligible for tuition reimbursemen
- High School or Preparatory School Graduate.
- Acceptance into an accredited program leading to one of the careers listed below.

- Completed application with required credentials filed prior to April 15.
- Final applicants must appear for personal interview before scholarship committee.
- Merit Based Scholarship.
APPLICATIONS:
Application Period: February 15 – April 15
- Mailed first week of February to the guidance officers of the 13 towns of Northeastern Connecticut.

SELECTION:
The selection committee will consist of the Susan Chilkott Scholarship Sub-Committee of the Philanthropy Committee and two Healthcare Professionals.
Selection will be based on an application, academic transcript if applicable, letters of recommendation, personal statement submitted by applicant and interview before the scholarship committee.
Following the April 15 deadline:
- All applications will be copied and distributed to each committee member for review and ranking.
- Ranking results sent back to Philanthropy Office by determined date.
- Scholarship committee meeting scheduled to determine the following:
- How many applicants will be interviewed?
- Philanthropy Office will schedule all applicants for interviews.
- Following interviews, Scholarship Committee members will determine:
- How many applicants will be awarded?
- Amount awarded to each applicant.
AWARD:
- This is a one-time scholarship awarded following the fall semester of each year.
- Applicants are eligible to reapply each year during the application period.
- Awarded annually to eligible individuals pursuing a career in a healthcare field.
DISBURSEMENTS:
Following the fall semester:
Scholarship recipients are required to send a letter with their official transcript to the Philanthropy Office with the following information:
- Update on completion of their fall semester along with plans for the spring semester.
- Name and address of Office of the Bursar for disbursement of funds.
