Ambulatory Care Unit

Day Kimball’s Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) is a state-of-the-art facility that provides a variety of medical and surgical services on an outpatient basis, including:

  • One-day surgery
  • Pre-surgery interviews and testing
  • Outpatient IV therapy
  • Same day admissions for surgical patients
  • Endoscopic procedures

One-day surgery is now available at Day Kimball’s ACU for a wide range of procedures that once would have required a hospital stay, such as general surgery, ENT (ear, nose and throat), ophthalmic (eye), dental, urological, orthopedic, obstetrical/gynecological, and podiatric surgeries.

The ACU consists of 10 patient rooms, the new Doris E. Madeira Endoscopy Suite and a family/friend waiting room. The ACU is staffed with a team of physicians, nurses and technicians who are dedicated to the comfort, convenience, and care of our patients. In fact, Day Kimball’s ACU nursing staff has been rated highest in patient satisfaction in Connecticut numerous times throughout the past three years.

What to expect during your visit/procedure

Family members or friends may wait for the patient in the ACU’s waiting room, located next to the nurses’ station.

Coffee and juice are available for waiting family members and friends in the ACU’s refreshment station. A variety of beverages, soups, salads and deli sandwiches are also available in the “Hospitality Café,” located on the hospital’s main floor, next to the main information desk.

The ACU staff will call all patients within 72 hours after their procedure to check on their status and answer any questions

Important reminders/things to remember

Please follow pre-procedure instructions provided to you by the surgeon and/or pre-admission nurse, such as nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

Please arrive at the hospital at the time indicated by hospital staff.

You MUST have a ride home following your procedure.

It is necessary that a friend/family member is present while your physician and/or nurse gives you discharge instructions. You may feel sleepy after your procedure, and it is very important to follow your physician’s instructions in the home.
