Emergency DepartmentIn a rural community, it is vitally important to have quick access to emergency medical services. To help make this a reality in northeastern Connecticut, Day Kimball Hospital has dedicated the last decade to building an advanced emergency medical system that meets the unique needs of the community that depends upon us. This advanced emergency system begins with potentially life saving pre-hospital care from highly trained emergency medical technicians and paramedics, and extends to the high quality care provided by Day Kimball’s Emergency Department (ED). For patients with minor injuries or illnesses, the hospital’s “PromptCare” program provides prompt, quality medical care while greatly reducing the time spent in the ED. Day Kimball Hospital’s ED is a Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Level II Emergency Department, which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Day Kimball’s ED treats over 26,000 patients annually. Patients of all ages with all types of injuries and illnesses are treated regardless of their ability to pay. Day Kimball’s ED is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of physicians, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, patient care technicians and unit receptionists. The department’s physicians are board certified and have extensive experience in emergency medicine. In addition, nurses are certified in advance cardiac life support and pediatric advanced life support. A close relationship between the ED staff and local physicians, including primary care physicians, provides excellent communication and collaboration regarding patient care. Day Kimball’s ED features an array of modern emergency medicine equipment, including state-of-the-art bedside monitoring, airway devices, fiberoptic laryngoscope, and bedside ultrasound. For patients who need the highly specialized services of a major medical center, Day Kimball’s ED is affiliated with the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center. Patients can be transferred to the medical center by helicopter quickly, thereby saving valuable time. PromptCarePromptCare has been specifically developed to treat patients with minor, non urgent injuries or illnesses. The most common type of cases seen in PromptCare are wrist and ankle sprains; broken bones; minor cuts; respiratory infections, such as bronchitis; bladder infections and many other non-life threatening injuries and illnesses. PromptCare was created to be an “emergency department within an emergency department,” with separate treatment areas and staff for faster evaluation and treatment. PromptCare is staffed by highly trained and experienced physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses working in close consultation with the emergency department physicians on duty. This team of emergency medicine professionals have been specifically trained to treat minor injuries and illnesses in a PromptCare type of setting. Services ProvidedJCAHO Level II emergency care. A physician is on-duty in the ED 24 hours a day. PromptCare is staffed by a physician assistant or a nurse practitioner working under the supervision of the emergency department physician. What to expect during your visit/procedurePatients are seen by the ED physician or physician assistant/nurse practitioner in a sequence which is based first on the severity of the patient’s condition according to triage criteria and secondly on the order of their arrival. Waiting patients are reassessed regularly and the order in which they are seen is changed if condition changes. Family/Significant other is allowed in the examination room with the patient at the discretion of the nurse and physician. Important reminders/things to rememberIf you or your family is required to wait for Emergency Department services, it is most likely because the medical staff is treating patients who require more immediate attention. We ask for your understanding and patience. It is important to understand that awaiting results of lab work or x-rays may take time and may prolong your emergency department visit. Vending machines are located in the Emergency Department. The Hospitality Café, located next to the hospital’s main lobby, is open Monday – Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Please check with the patient’s nurse before allowing the patient to eat or drink anything. Pay phones are available in the waiting area. Since the hospital uses electronic telemetry, cell phones are prohibited in th ED and PromptCare treatment areas. |
