Intensive Care UnitDay Kimball Hospital’s Gordon Harrower Memorial Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been specially designed to provide the highest level of medical care to the most critically ill or injured patients. The ICU is a combined 17-bed unit, consisting of six single ICU beds and 11 semi-private telemetry beds supported by an advanced central monitoring stations and a special procedure room. The unit’s critical care and monitoring equipment, including cardiac monitors, oximetry, hemodynamic monitors and ventilators, are state-of-the-art and offer the same level of technology found at major medical centers. Pulmonary catheterizations and the insertion of heart pacemakers, among other advanced procedures, are performed in the unit’s Special Procedures Room. An interdisciplinary team approach is key to the quality services provided by Day Kimball’s ICU. Our team consists of highly skilled physicians, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, dietitians, social workers, chaplains, case managers and other professionals, as needed. The unit’s board certified cardiologists have privileges at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA. and at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT., giving patients the expertise of and ready access to both major medical centers as needed. Day Kimball’s ICU possesses an experienced and highly skilled critical care nursing staff. Over half of the nurses have ten years or more of critical care experience, and a quarter have over two decades of experience. In addition to continuously monitoring patients, this highly skilled and caring staff assists physicians in developing treatment plans, as well as providing advanced care, including interpreting EKGs and monitoring heart functions. ICU patients receive a level of highly advanced care often found at major medical centers combined with the patient focused care Day Kimball is noted for providing. Day Kimball’s nursing staff has consistently been rated highest in patient satisfaction in Connecticut according to a national, independent survey.
