Ambulatory Care Unit

Our Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) is a state-of-the art facility that provides a variety of medical and surgical services on an outpatient basis.  Its staff of physicians, nurses and technicians is dedicated to the comfort, convenience, and care of our patients.  The ACU nursing staff has been rated highest in patient satisfaction in Connecticut numerous times.

Bone Densitometry (DEXA Scanning)

Day Kimball Hospital’s Diagnostic Services Department offers bone densitometry testing used in the detection of osteoporosis. This quick and painless test uses low doses of x-rays to detect changes in bone density.

Over the last decade, Day Kimball Hospital has made a substantial investment in expanding the cancer care services it offers to the community. In addition to building new facilities and purchasing new technology, the hospital has added a number of preventive, diagnostic, treatment and after care services to assist cancer patients.

Day Kimball HomeCare is an important component of the continuum of care provided by the Day Kimball family of services. When a patient is discharged from the hospital and is recuperating for surgery, for example, or is living with chronic illness, the specialized services he or she needs can often be performed in the home by healthcare professionals, allowing the patient the comfort of familiar surroundings.

Day Kimball HomeMakers, formerly Northeast HomeMakers, a non-profit subsidiary of Day Kimball Hospital, has been providing professional, in-home support services to northeastern Connecticut since 1985. The agency’s exceptional non-medical homemaker, chore, companion, pastoral care assistance, and respite services often enable elderly or disabled clients to live safely in the familiar and comfortable surroundings of their own homes.

Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut

Day Kimball Hospital provides hospice and palliative care services to the community through the services of Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut. A program of Day Kimball HomeCare, Hospice of Northeastern Connecticut was founded in 1983 and is licensed by the state of Connecticut, accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and certified by Medicare.

Intensive Care Unit

Day Kimball Hospital’s Gordon Harrower Memorial Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been specially designed to provide the highest level of medical care to the most critically ill or injured patients. The ICU is a combined 17-bed unit, consisting of six single ICU beds and 11 semi-private telemetry beds supported by an advanced central monitoring stations and a special procedure room.

Infectious Disease

Day Kimball Hospital offers a consultative service for patients with acute or chronic infectious diseases. Dr. Douglas Waite, and Dr. Mireya Wessolossky, board certified infectious disease specialists on staff at the hospital, provide consultations on an inpatient and outpatient basis. A referral from a patient’s primary care physician is required.

Laboratory

Day Kimball Hospital provides a full range of clinical laboratory services, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for receiving and processing blood, fluid and tissue samples. The hospital’s laboratory underwent a complete renovation in 1996 and houses an array of comprehensive and accurate testing equipment. Laboratory personnel perform over 1.4 million tests a year.

Mammography, a diagnostic imaging procedure fro the detection of breast abnormalities are provided at three convenient locations: Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, at the Danielson Health Center, and at the Plainfield Health Center in Putnam.

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)

MRI scanning produces extremely detailed images of the body using magnetic waves and radio frequency energy. These state-of-the-art diagnostic examinations are used to assist in the detection of musculoskeletal diseases, particularly shoulder and knee injuries, spinal cord diseases, diseases of the arteries and the detection of tumors.

Neurology

Day Kimball Hospital provides outpatient neurology consultations and diagnostic testing for patients with conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord or nervous system. The Neurology Department is staffed by two board certified neurologists from the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center. A physician referral is necessary for an appointment.

An important component of Day Kimball Hospital’s cardiac services is diagnostic testing provided by Non-Invasive Cardiology Services. This service provides computerized heart monitoring tests which assist in evaluating heart disease and detecting abnormal heart rhythms.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is an advanced diagnostic tool that utilizes safe doses of radioactive material (called radioisotopes) to perform bone and organ scans. These tests are used to study the function and structure of many areas of the body, including the heart, brain, lungs and kidneys. The radioisotopes highlight the bones or organs being studied so a “SPECT Camera” can produce an image, which can assist physicians in making a diagnosis.

Support Groups

Day Kimball Hospital sponsors numerous support groups on a wide variety of health related issues for the community. These groups meet regularly at the hospital or the Center for Healthy Aging in Putnam. Most are facilitated by trained hospital staff, although some groups are led by community members who have received training from the hospital’s Wellness Department.

It is also a valuable tool in prenatal care to determine the health and growth of the fetus.
