Obstetrics/GynecologyThere is probably no event in the life of a woman or her family more important than the birth of a child. To help make this event a joyous one, Day Kimball Hospital has built the beautiful, new Center for Women and Infant’s Health. At the center, childbirth is treated as an important and natural milestone in the family’s life. We practice a “family centered” approach to birth, whereby the mother, her partner and family can be involved as much as they like. This approach supports our emphasis on helping the mother and her family bond with their new baby. One of the most outstanding amenities of the new Center is its welcoming surroundings. We have taken great care to create a feeling of genuine warmth and caring, skillfully blending a home-like feel with the latest in medical technology. The center features seven labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum (LDRP) suites and four gynecological patient rooms, all of which have been specially designed to resemble a bedroom at home. The LDRP suites are private, with their own bathrooms and showers. An abundance of woodwork and floor to ceiling windows to allow in the natural light add to this special feeling of warmth. Modern amenities in the suites include televisions, VCRs, refrigerators and special overnight recliners for family members. With the new LDRP suites, mothers will no longer have to move from room to room after delivering their babies. They remain in their own private rooms throughout labor, delivery and post partum. With our family centered approach, we encourage mothers to have their babies “room in” with them. This is to assist the nurses in teaching new born care, and, most importantly, to help mothers enjoy the opportunity to bond before going home. Although the center may feel like home, it also features the latest in medical care. If a cesarean section becomes necessary to protect the health of the mother or baby, an ultramodern cesarean section procedure room is located right within the center. Also present is a state-of-the-art central fetal monitoring system, allowing nurses to continually monitor both mother’s and baby’s vital signs before and after birth. If needed, this monitoring system can also be linked to an affiliated major medical center, immediately accessing the additional expertise and experience of other neo-natal specialists. On those rare occasions when a baby may need additional, highly specialized care, our association with the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, means a neo-natal intensive care unit is quickly available. Day Kimball has an experienced medical staff from which women can choose their care provider, including board certified obstetrician/gynecologists, several family practice physicians who also deliver babies and certified nurse midwives. The Center is staffed by an experienced and caring team of mother/baby nurses. These nurses provide much of the support, guidance and teaching necessary to make the birthing experience a meaningful and positive one. Our nurses’ skills, care and compassion have been widely recognized by our patients. W are proud to have a nursing staff which has been consistently rated highest in patient satisfaction in Connecticut according to an independent, national survey. Services ProvidedLabor and delivery, care of new mothers and newborns, care of sick newborns who do not need neo-natal intensive care, care of gynecology patients. What to expect during your visit/procedureTo ensure that that your wishes are followed during labor and delivery, be sure to discuss pain control options with your doctor or nurse midwife. The State of Connecticut requires that a birth certificate be completed prior to discharge. A staff member, from Medical Records, will visit you in the hospital to gather the information needed. Medical Records can also help you obtain a social security number for your baby. You, your baby, and partner/support person will be banded with matching identification bracelets. The bracelets serve for security and identification purposes only. We will provide you with ice chips and fluids for comfort during labor. You may want to bring other personal items to help you through labor. You may want to consider bringing a nightgown and bathrobe, shampoo and toiletries and a pacifier for your new baby, if you plan are using one. You should also bring clothes for your baby for when you go home, including undershirt, outfit, hat and, depending on the weather, a sweater and/or bunting with feet. Make sure you have a car seat to take your baby home in and have it available at the time of discharge Important reminders/things to rememberVisitors are limited to individuals who know a patient Brothers and sisters of new babies are welcome, but other children need to be 12-years-old or older to visit.
