Pulmonary RehabilitationDay Kimball Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an outpatient program of education and safe, supervised exercise for individuals with chronic lung disease such as emphysema, asthma and chronic bronchitis. The program’s goal is to help patients live as active and normal a life as possible through active participation in their own healthcare. Located within the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department at Day Kimball Hospital, patients are referred to the program by their physician or pulmonologist. The program’s staff consists of experienced and knowledgeable registered nurses, exercise physiologists and respiratory therapists. The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program offers three program levels (described below). Each patient referred to the Pulmonary Rehabilitation department receives an individualized rehabilitation plan developed specifically for their unique needs and goals. Assessments that contribute to the development of each patient’s treatment plan are determined after a thorough evaluation of the patient’s history and physical evaluation, pulmonary function tests, analysis of the patient’s tolerance of a six minute walk, and other pulmonary function tests. The program’s supervised exercises and educational sessions assist patients in increasing physical and cardiovascular endurance and to develop relaxation techniques to assist in improving physical and emotional well being. Services ProvidedPulmonary Rehabilitation offers three program levels – Level 2 provides exercise sessions and education classes for 90 minutes at each session. The patient will have full monitoring including telemetry EKG, pulse oximetry, blood pressures and lung assessment. Education takes place after the exercise session in the facility’s Multi Purpose Room. This level is covered by many insurance companies. Level 3 provides the same exercise and education. The patient has the same monitoring as Level 2 with the exception of telemetry EKG. This program is designed for the patient whose insurance will not cover the cost of the program. It is self-pay at $91.30 per month for two months. The hospital will bill the patient for each month. Level 4 is also known as the “maintenance class.” Patients who have graduated from Level 2 or 3 and wish to exercise under the supervision of the Pulmonary Rehab Staff, are welcome to continue. The self-pay cost is $41.50 per month and is billed to the patient. What to expect during your visit/procedureDuring your first visit to Pulmonary Rehabilitation your medical history and the medication profile will be reviewed with you. You will be asked to fill out informational forms to assist the staff in planning your educational needs and exercise prescription. You will also perform a Six-minute walk. During this functional ability test, you will be asked to walk (at your own pace and with a staff person) a designated course while your heart rate, oxygen level and breathlessness will be assessed. This test will be repeated when you complete the program, so we can determine your progress. Important reminders/things to rememberFor the first visit, please bring your insurance card(s) and a list of your medications (prescriptions and over the counter.) For exercise classes wear loose, comfortable clothing. Please bring a clean pair of sneakers with you for exercising. If you need to cancel your visit or exercise class, please call as soon as possible and we will reschedule your appointment. |
