PUTNAM, CT – Day Kimball Healthcare is hosting a free lecture about screening, prevention and the latest treatments for colon and rectal cancer on Thursday, March 25, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. in Day Kimball Hospital’s private dining room on the main floor. The public is invited to attend this candid, and sometimes funny, informative discussion. The lecture is scheduled in recognition of March’s National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Prominent local physicians, Dr. Sherry Kroll, internal medicine, Dr. Richard Slater, gastroenterology, and Dr. Steven Schimmel, anesthesiology, will speak about the importance of early detection, the colonoscopy procedure including the effects of anesthesia and surgical process, and preventive measures.

“Given the prevalence of colon cancer in the United States, early detection is imperative for treatment that could lead to a cure,” said Dr. Sherry Kroll. “Screening individuals without symptoms allows us to find polyps, which can be removed before they grow into a cancerous lesion.”

When detected early, colon cancer is 80-90 percent treatable. Physicians recommend that everyone has a colonoscopy beginning at age 50 if there is no family history of colon cancer. The American Cancer Society's most recent estimates for colorectal cancer in the United States are for 2009:

  • 106,100 new cases of colon cancer
  • 40,870 new cases of rectal cancer
  • 49,920 deaths from colorectal cancer

In order to detect colorectal cancer early on, Day Kimball Healthcare has a state-of-the-art Endoscopy Suite. The suite consists of two modern procedure rooms and two private post-procedure recovery rooms. The hospital’s Endoscopy Service also provides TEEs (transesophageal echocardiography) and bronchoscopies. Board certified Day Kimball Healthcare-affiliated male and female physicians, as well as gastroenterologists affiliated with Hartford Hospital perform these procedures at Day Kimball Hospital. The Endoscopy Suite is staffed by an experienced and caring team of physicians, nurses and patient care technicians.
