Shine a Light on Lung Cancer

Day Kimball Healthcare (DKH) and Quinebaug Valley Community College (QVCC), in partnership with the Northeast District Department of Health, HealthQuest Northeast Connecticut and the Lung Cancer Alliance, are inviting the public to “Shine a Light on Lung Cancer." 

Visitors to the free event can enjoy:

  • An Oncology on Canvas art display, featuring art pieces created by cancer survivors
  • Participation in a group mural painting designed to bring hope, inspiration and support to survivors
  • Complimentary 15-minute guided meditation sessions with QVCC’s resident yoga instructor, Dorothy Barbara, for anyone interested in learning more about this holistic approach to managing stress while quitting smoking or at any time in life. Information about upcoming yoga, Ayurveda and meditation at QVCC will be available. Enter to win a free yoga, Ayurveda or meditation class with QVCC’s Continuing and Professional Education!
  • Displays and information about lung cancer as well as local resources to help in quitting smoking and for the treatment and support of those fighting any type of cancer
  • A speaking program at 11:30 a.m. featuring an interactive Shine the Light moment of silence to honor those affected by lung cancer, as well as two important announcements: 
    • DKH will announce a new lung cancer related service 
    • QVCC will announce a related change in campus policy that will soon go into effect
  • Refreshments and giveaways

This Shine a Light event is one of 200 such events being coordinated nationwide by the Lung Cancer Alliance this year, making it the largest awareness event for lung cancer in the country. This the 8th annual observance of the event. November is also Lung Cancer Awareness month and the Great American Smokeout, which encourages people to quit smoking and using tobacco, is observed this year on November 17.
