Speech Language Pathology in Stroke Recovery

June 12, 2015
Authored by Joanne Lambert, M.S. CCC/SLP

After a stroke, people can experience a wide range of difficulties in their day to day activities. But many people don’t realize that speech language pathologists are part of the medical team that can assist with stroke recovery, and not just with problems related to speech.

Speech language pathologists also diagnose and treat many other stroke-related impairments such as:

  • difficulty swallowing
  • cognitive-communication deficits like reduced ability to “find the words,” understand, or remember information
  • facial droop caused by stroke
If you or someone you love has been affected by stroke and is struggling with speech, language, swallowing, or cognitive communication skills, there is hope.

A speech language pathologist will work alongside you and your loved ones to develop a personalized treatment program that focuses on improving these skills as much as possible.
