Day Kimball Healthcare's Nuclear Medicine Department Receives American College of Radiology Accreditation

May 12, 2009

PUTNAM, CT –Day Kimball Healthcare has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in nuclear medicine as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

In the past year, approximately 3,758 exams were completed in Nuclear Medicine including bone scans, lung scans, thyroid scans and cardiac SPECT scans.

"This accreditation recognizes the highest standard and quality of care within our organization," said JoAnn Slota, Diagnostic Imaging Operations Coordinator. "We at Day Kimball pride ourselves in providing these standards for our patients."

Nuclear Medicine is a branch of the Diagnostic Imaging department that uses radioactive materials for medical diagnosis. It is the technique of studying normal functional processes of the body by measuring the amount of emitted radiation from a radioisotope. The isotope is injected into the patient or taken orally for certain scans, and the patient is scanned under a camera to detect the radiation and produce an image on the Nuclear Medicine computer. These images are then interpreted by the radiologist.

The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualification of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment.
