PUTNAM, CT –John Miller, owner and CEO of the National Chromium Company Inc., was elected Day Kimball Hospital's chairman of the board of directors at the Annual Corporators' Meeting at Quinebaug Valley Community College last night. More than 150 Corporators attended the meeting and recognized outgoing chairman, Peter Deary, for his nine years of service with a plaque given in his name to be hung at the Day Kimball Hospital Outpatient Center in Plainfield.

"As we look to the year ahead, I welcome John Miller as our new Chairman of the Board and thank Peter Deary for his years of dedication and commitment to Day Kimball Hospital," said Robert Smanik, FACHE, President and CEO of Day Kimball Hospital. "John's longstanding history as a member of the community and his strong business acumen are immensely beneficial to the hospital. John's work with Peter this past year will allow for a seamless transition."

Speaking of his responsibilities, Miller said, "My goal is to institute a culture within the Board and the entire Day Kimball family that is focused on putting the patient first. My plan is to emphasize communication, education, customer service and quality. While Day Kimball does a wonderful job, the ‘bar of excellence' is dynamic, and thus is always rising. Therefore, we must also rise to the community's expectations for quality of service and care."

The designated plaque in recognition for Deary's work came as a surprise during his final official business as chairman. Deary and his family have been involved with the hospital for over two decades, most notably for the Annual Deary Memorial Road Race and Walk, which raises much needed funds for local cancer care. This coming year will be the inaugural Deary Gala and Auction in March.

Elizabeth Kuszaj, Executive Director of the Northeastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce and board communications committee chairman, was master of ceremonies. Deary led the business meeting followed by remarks from Smanik and Miller.

A life-long Putnam resident, Miller graduated from Marianapolis Preparatory School and holds a Bachelor's Degree and an MBA from Bryant College. Miller is also a Corporator of Day Kimball Hospital and Putnam Bank as well as a Putnam Bank Board Director.
