Overview

Maternal child health services offer top-notch care for birthing parents and newborns in a family-centered environment. Our services are provided within the Hale Medical Pavilion at Day Kimball Hospital, a warm and welcoming home-like setting that’s equipped with the latest medical technology and staffed by physicians, neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs), physician assistants (PAs), and registered nurses (RNs) who have been recognized as providing some of the best care in Connecticut.

Labor, Delivery and Neonatal Care

Our Burdick Family Birthing Center offers exceptional care to families during labor, delivery, and the postpartum period. All patients are cared for with a family-centered approach, in a welcoming, home-like environment.

Located on the first floor of the Hale Medical Pavilion, the Birthing Center includes seven beautifully equipped labor, delivery, and recovery rooms with the latest fetal monitoring and birthing equipment as well as many of the comforts of home. The birthing center has a state-of-the-art central fetal monitoring system, allowing our staff to continuously monitor both the patient’s and baby’s vital signs before and after birth. If a cesarean delivery is necessary, an ultramodern operating room is located right within the birthing center.

The center is staffed by a warm and caring team of board-certified obstetricians/gynecologists, NNPs, PAs, and registered nurses who have extensive experience in maternity and newborn care. Our nurses have been consistently rated highest in patient satisfaction in Connecticut according to an independent, national survey.

Working alongside the obstetricians and the labor and delivery nurses is a Neonatal Department, made up of a team of neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs), experienced in providing neonatal intensive care. This team of NNPs covers the unit 24 hours per day, 7 days per week to provide appropriate care to your newborn infant whether they are born healthy or require interventions. 10% of all newborn infants require assistance at birth. If further care is required, the NNP team is trained to provide expert care to the sick newborn. This may also include stabilizing the infant and preparing for transport to a Tertiary Care Center if more intensive care is required. On those rare occasions when a baby may need additional highly specialized neonatal care, our association with Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, and the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, means a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is quickly available.

Surgical Care for Non-Maternity Gynecology Patients

Our surgical suite for non-maternity gynecology patients offers the latest technology for procedures such as tubal ligation (having your “tubes tied”), endometrial ablation and hysterectomy – all within a coordinated, compassionate, and patient-centered environment. Visitor Policy as of March 2024

  • Patients may continue to have two support people in labor and postpartum.
  • The second support person can stay in the hospital throughout labor, and then come and go during visiting hours after delivery.
  • After delivery, additional visitors (only 2 at a time) may visit during visiting hours from 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.
  • Siblings of the baby may come to visit.  All other visitors must be at least 16 years old.
  • Visitors are only allowed after the patient has completed the recovery process (at least 2 hours after delivery).  Your nurse will guide you as to when this time is, so you can let your visitors know.
  • For the health of patients and staff, we ask visitors who are unwell, especially with respiratory symptoms, to refrain from visiting.
  • Visitor policies are subject to change depending on high community rates of Influenza, COVID, and RSV.

What to Expect

To ensure that that your wishes are followed during labor and delivery, be sure to discuss pain control options with your doctor or nurse midwife.

The State of Connecticut requires that a birth certificate be completed prior to discharge. A staff member, from Medical Records, will visit you in the hospital to gather the information needed. Medical Records can also help you obtain a social security number for your baby.

You, your baby, and partner/support person will be banded with matching identification bracelets. The bracelets serve for security and identification purposes only.

We will provide you with ice chips and fluids for comfort during labor. You may want to bring other personal items to help you through labor.

You may want to consider bringing a nightgown and bathrobe, shampoo and toiletries and a pacifier for your new baby, if you plan on using one. You should also bring clothes for your baby for when you go home, including undershirt, outfit, hat and, depending on the weather, a sweater and/or bunting with feet.

Make sure you have a car seat to take your baby home in and have it available at the time of discharge. Please familiarize yourself with it and try it in your car ahead of time because our nurses are not able to put the seat in your car.  Your local police department may be able to help you learn to properly install your car seat.

Anesthesia During Labor & Delivery

On the day of your delivery you will have the opportunity to speak with your anesthesia provider about pain management options.
