As residents throughout Connecticut begin digging out from the blizzard, Day Kimball Health (DKH) is urging the community to take precautions to prevent snow-related injuries and other weather-related health emergencies.
Emergency departments often see an increase in heart-related events, carbon monoxide exposure and cold-weather injuries during storm cleanup efforts. Day Kimball Health offers the following safety reminders:
1. Take precautions while shoveling.
Heavy, wet snow can place significant strain on the heart, particularly for adults over 40 and those with underlying health conditions. Take frequent breaks, push snow instead of lifting when possible and avoid overexertion. Stop immediately and call 911 if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath or dizziness.
2. Prevent carbon monoxide exposure.
Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless and can quickly become life-threatening. Never operate generators indoors or in garages. Keep them at least 20 feet from your home. Do not use ovens or grills to heat your home. If you develop headache, nausea, confusion or dizziness, get to fresh air immediately and call 911.
3. Protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia.
Dress in layers, limit prolonged exposure to the cold and cover exposed skin, especially hands, ears and faces. Early signs of frostbite include numbness and pale or waxy skin. Symptoms of hypothermia may include shivering, confusion and drowsiness.
4. Use snow blowers safely.
Never place your hands inside a snow blower. If snow or debris jams the chute, turn off the engine, wait several seconds for all moving parts to stop and use a solid object to clear the blockage. Never leave a running snow blower unattended and keep children far away from operating equipment.
5. Know when to seek emergency care.
For life-threatening emergencies, including chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke or serious injury, call 911. Day Kimball Health’s emergency department remains open and prepared to care for the community.
Residents are encouraged to allow extra time for snow removal and to check on elderly neighbors and loved ones during the cleanup process. For more information, visit www.daykimball.org.
