Route 44 Road Closure May Impact Travel to Day Kimball Hospital

As Putnam students return to school on, Thursday, August 27, we anticipate increased traffic along the Route 44 detour route.
The combination of the ongoing detour and increased school-related traffic is expected to create heavier-than-normal congestion near Murphy Park along Recreation Park Road, Keech Street, and Wicker Street, particularly during student arrival and dismissal times.
If you have an upcoming appointment, we encourage you to allow extra travel time and plan accordingly to help ensure you arrive on time.
PROJECT UPDATE:
The Route 44 construction project will begin on Monday, July 27, 2026.
An enhanced detour map is included below to help you familiarize yourself with posted detour route during construction.

Day Kimball Health is advising patients, visitors and community members to plan for extra travel time beginning in July as the state undertakes a road project on Route 44 in Putnam.
Beginning June 29, message boards will be posted in the area to notify motorists of upcoming detour information. Road closures are expected to begin July 13, when the Connecticut Department of Transportation will begin work to repair a retaining wall along Route 44 near the Cargill Falls Mill site.

Services, appointments, and emergency care continue without interruption.
We encourage you to:
- Watch for state detour signage for guidance on approved alternate routes
- Allow extra travel time when heading to any DKH location on Route 44, particularly for scheduled appointments
- Contact us ahead of your appointment if you have concerns about access
Emergency Access is Unaffected
Emergency services have a designated access route to Day Kimball Hospital that will remain fully operational throughout this project. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 9-1-1.
