Hospital Admissions Information

We want you to feel as comfortable as possible during your hospital stay. To prepare you and your loved ones for a smooth experience, please review the following important information.

What to Bring
Essential information: Social security number, driver’s license/state I.D., medical insurance card with employer and subscriber information, a list of all medications you’re currently taking, and a copy of your advance directive and living will/durable power of attorney for health care, if you have them.
View information about creating an advance directive and living will >

Personal items: You will be provided with nearly every personal care item you’ll need during your stay. However, you may wish to bring items such as dentures, hearing aid(s) or eyeglasses. These may be stored in your bedside cabinet. Please keep in mind that items wrapped in tissue or left on tabletops or meal trays could be discarded accidentally.

For safety reasons, please do NOT bring any plug-in electrical appliances such as electric razors, blow dryers, radios, CD/DVD players, computers or other electronic devices. You may bring battery-operated devices, but you must provide your own batteries.

The hospital is not responsible for loss of dentures, eyeglasses, hearing aids, or any other personal items or cash.

Inpatient Services
Hospitalist medicine: Our hospitalist physicians are board certified internal medicine physicians who specialize in caring for patients in the hospital setting. They will monitor your recovery and communicate with your primary care physician about your condition, and are available around the clock to answer questions. Meet our team of hospitalist physicians >

Nutritional services: Our clinical nutrition department includes registered dietitians who consult with your physician to provide a diet that meets your individual dietary needs. Dietitians may also provide dietary assessments and education to help you improve your nutrition.

Pharmacy: The hospital pharmacy is available around the clock to meet your prescription needs.

Interpreter services: Services are available 24/7 for those who speak a primary language other than English and/or who use sign language.

Hospital Visitor Information

Visiting Hours & Parking
It is recognized that visits to patients by friends and family are a desirable part of the patient's therapy. Visitors, therefore, are cordially welcomed. Regulations on visiting are also necessary. The purpose of these regulations is to ensure that the visit is beneficial to the patient and does not interfere with patient treatment or hospital operations.

Free Parking
Free and secure parking is available to all Day Kimball patients and visitors. Our parking lots are adjacent to the main, emergency and professional building entrances and are well-lit overnight.

Visitor Entrance
All visitors should enter the hospital via Entrance D (view and print our Hospital Campus Map for reference), Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. For those visiting outside those hours or on holidays, please use Entrance E.

Medical/Surgical/Pediatric Inpatient Unit
Visiting hours are from 12:00 noon to 8:00 P.M.

Pediatric Patients
Parents or guardians may visit at any time at the discretion of the nurse in charge. Siblings may visit during regular hospital visiting hours, 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. at the discretion of the nurse in charge. Children must be free of signs or symptoms of infection.

Intensive Care Unit
One visit of ten minutes duration will be allowed to two immediate family members at a time, every hour on the hour, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. In accordance with intensity of care required, this may be subject to change at the discretion of the ICU Charge Nurse.

Maternal Child Health
The Birthing Center is a secured unit. Visitors are admitted through a controlled access at the main door of the Birthing Center. Except for siblings of the baby, visitors must be 12 years of age or older. It is preferable that the baby not be handled by visitors, but if anyone does touch the baby, they should first wash their hands.

During Labor and Delivery:
Ordinarily, two persons of the patient's choice are allowed in the Birthing Room with the laboring woman. Additional persons may be allowed at the discretion of the nurse or physician/midwife.

Recognizing that birth is a highly personal and individual experience for a woman, and that she should be encouraged and allowed to have whomever she chooses for support, privacy of other patients and the size of the Birthing Center may at times dictate limiting number of visitors at one time to a given Birthing Room.

The laboring woman may choose to exclude certain visitors from her Birthing Room and measures will be taken to help her do so, including, if necessary, the use of security personnel.

After Delivery of the Baby:
The father of the newborn or the laboring woman's significant other is not considered a visitor and may remain at any time.

Grandparents, brothers and sisters of the baby may visit anytime. Before children go into the room, they must first be seen by a nurse on the unit to visually screen them for obvious symptoms of infection. If there are obvious symptoms of infection, children must be excluded from direct contact with the baby.

For all other visitors, visiting hours are 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m.

Gynecological Surgery Patients at Hale Medical Pavilion
Parents, spouse, and children of the patient may visit anytime from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Other visitors (must be 12 years of age or over) may visit from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m.

Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit
Visitors are limited and prior arrangements must be made with the patient. For those who have made prior arrangements, visiting hours are 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. or by special arrangement. All visitors must check in at the reception desk in the lobby at the Visitor's Entrance (Entrance D). To protect the patients' confidentiality, visitors should announce their own name rather than stating the name of the patient when requesting visitation to the Behavioral Health Inpatient Clinic. Only family and friends determined by the patient and the treatment team to be significant to the patient's well being and recovery may visit the patient during his/her psychiatric admission. The charge nurse may restrict the number of visitors permitted on the unit at any time for safety and therapeutic reasons.

Visiting Guidelines

Patient Information
Visitors can obtain a patient's room number at Visitor Information Desk.

Number of Visitors
Patients may have only two visitors at any one time during their hospital stay. Exchange of visitors is permitted during the visiting hours, except in the ICU. In the ICU, only two immediate family members are allowed to visit each hour, for ten minutes.

Age
Children are permitted to visit patients on the Medical/Surgical area, adult patients on Pediatrics, and the Psychiatric Unit (for children visiting PIP: see PIP visitor policy). Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Siblings under 12 years of age of pediatric patients may visit during regular visiting hours (12:00 noon to 8:00 P.M.), if accompanied by an adult.

Cafeteria and Hospitality Cafe
The cafeteria serves a varied menu of healthy and delicious foods. Breakfast is served from 6:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m., lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

The Hospitality Cafe also offers light fare, including salads, soup and sandwiches, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Shop at Day Kimball Hospital
The Shop, Day Kimball Hospital's gift shop, is open 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and occasionally in the evening.

The Shop has a wonderful selection of unique and seasonal gift items. Purchases at The Shop are tax free and complimentary gift wrapping is offered with each sale. All proceeds go directly to the Day Kimball Hospital Woman’s Board general fund and ultimately help to purchase medical equipment for the hospital.

The Shop is operated and managed solely by a dedicated group of volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering some time (you need not be a Woman’s Board member to volunteer) you may contact Janet Johnson, Volunteer Services Coordinator for Day Kimball Hospital at (860) 928-6541 ext. 2279.

Wireless Internet Access (WiFi) for Guests
Wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) service is provided for patients and their families. This service is available throughout most areas of the main hospital campus in Putnam and selected other locations. To connect, look for the “dkh_guestnet” wireless connection, which should automatically appear on your Wi-Fi connected device.

Please note: Once connected, you will be presented with the opportunity to review the Acceptable Use Policy and an agreement page. To reach the Internet, you must agree to the Acceptable Use Policy by clicking on the ACCEPT button.

Security
The hospital is protected by members of our trained professional security staff, on duty and at your service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our Safety/Security Department provides traffic control, parking assistance, and general security throughout the facility, and on hospital grounds.

All jewelry and money, except for small change for miscellaneous purchases, should be left at home. The hospital shall not be responsible for loss to items including documents, cash, dental work or dental prosthetics, eyeglasses, credit cards, hearing aids, and items of unusual value or size that have not or can not be placed in the Hospital safe.

Smoking Policy
Day Kimball is a smoke-free facility to ensure a healthy environment for our employees, patients and visitors. There are designated smoking areas outside the hospital.
